Baseball Defeats St. Mary's University in Non-Conference Matchup

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team defeated St. Mary's University (MN) in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon at Copeland Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • UWL scored first in the bottom of the second inning as they scored three runs. George Seaman led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Anthony Vivian. Logan Pye then reached on a bunt single and advanced to second on an error that allowed both Seaman and Vivian to score. A Tim Urlaub ground out would move Pye to third while a Jack Moran ground out scored Py to make it 3-0.
  • The Eagles added two more runs in the third inning as Mac Born led off with a walk and moved to second on a single by Jack Olver. Born advanced to third on a double play ground out and scored on a passed ball. Vivian would walk and later score on a passed ball as well to give UWL a 5-0 lead.
  • The Cardinals of St. Mary's University, would score two runs on a hit and an error to cut their deficit to 5-2. 
  • The Eagles would get the two runs back in their half of the fourth inning. Nate Witte reached on a fielding error and stole second base. Chris VandenHeuvel reached on a walk. Born then walked and on the play Witte scored on a throwing error. VandenHeuvel then scored on a sacrifice fly to Olver to give UWL a 7-2 lead. 
  • A Witte sacrifice fly in the fifth inning extended UWL's lead to 8-2.
  • Back-to-back singles by Born and Olver to start the bottom of the sixth inning followed by a one out single by Vivian to score Born put UWL up 9-2.
  • The Eagles would score the final three runs of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning as Eli Zollar drove in a run with a single, Luke Walton brought a run in when he reached on a fielders choice and Calvin Hargrove drove in the final run with a single.

FROM THE BOX SCORE
  • Offensively, UWL finished with 12 runs on 14 hits and seven walks. 
  • Born led the Eagles offense going 2-for-2 with two walks and two runs scored. 
  • Also finishing with two hits was Vivian (2-for-3), Olver (2-for-3) and Pye (2-for four). 
  • Eight different Eagles drove in a run. 
  • Owen Deprez (4-0) came on in relief for the Eagles to earn the win as he did not give up a run or a hit in 4.0 innings of relief.
  • St. Mary's scored two runs on four hits and two walks.
  • Riley Bauman finished 1-for-2 with a walk and a run scored while Cam Miller was 1-for-3 with an RBI.
