Second Half Comback Comes Up Short For Women's Basketball

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team's second half comeback comes up short as they fall to UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon.

HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • UW-Stevens Point scored the first seven points of the game and took a 9-2 lead with 5:43 left in the opening quarter. A Lauryn Milne three-pointer and layup would cut the Eagles deficit to 13-9 with :40 left. UW-Stevens point would score the final five points of the quarter to lead 18-9.
  • The Pointers would extend their lead to 22-12 before a free throw and layup from Katie Waukau made it 22-15 (7:19). UW-Stevens point took its largest lead at 28-17 on a layup by Rachel Hagen. A jumper by Milne, layup from Ali Sprangers and two free throws from Waukau would cut the half time score to 30-23. Milne led the Eagles in the first half with 10 points.
  • Lindsey Knuth hit a jumper followed by a three-pointer on the Eagles first two possessions of the second half to cut their deficit to 32-28. The Pointers would score 10 of the next 13 points to extend their lead to 42-31 with 5:09 left in the third quarter. UWL would then go on an 11-0 run to tie the game at 42-42 with :42 left. The Pointers would hit four free throws in final :42 to lead 46-42 after three quarters. 
  • Waukau would hit a three-pointer to start the fourth quarter and Meeker hit two free throws to tie the game at 48-48 with 6:30 left in the game. The two teams would trade baskets  before the Pointers hit a jumper and two free throws to make it 54-50 (4:22). Two Paige Schumann free throws would cut the Eagles deficit to 55-53 with 3:13 left. UW-Stevens Point would extend their to 61-55 with 1:40 left but a jumper and three-pointer from Milne with :35 left would pull the Eagles within 61-60. Josie Nies would hit a layup with :08 left. After an Eagle timeout to advance the ball, the Eagles would have one final chance but a three-pointer from Sprangers came up short.

FROM THE BOXSCORE
  • Milne and Waukau each had 15 points to lead the way for the Eagles. 
  • Meeker adds 13 points, and team high nine rebounds to go along with four assists. 
  • UWL finished shooting 21-of-57 (36.8%) from the floor including seven of 21 (33.3%) from three-point range. Eagles also shoot 11-of-16 (68.8%) from the free throw line. 
  • Alexa Thomson led the Pointers with 18 points, 10 rebounds while Gabby Gawlitta added 17 points. 
  • UW-Stevens Point shot 23-of-56 from the floor including three-of-12 (25%) from the three-point line. The Pointers also shot 15-of-22 from free throw line.
