UWL Splits Twinbill with Concordia Wisconsin; Korn Earns First Win as Head Coach

Rhinelander, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse split a non-conference doubleheader with Concordia University Wisconsin on Saturday in the Hodag Dome. The Falcons took the opener, 13-6 in eight innings, before  the Eagles came back to win the nightcap, 7-2. UWL is now 1-3 on the season while Concordia Wisconsin in 3-1.

It is the first career victory at UWL for head coach Sam Korn after serving as head coach at Rockford University (Ill.) in 2023.

Concordia Wisconsin took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning in the opener on three UWL errors. Jess Pozezinski had an RBI single. 

UWL tied the game in the bottom of the second. Lauren Winker walked to advanced to second on a wild pitch. Lindsay Steien walked with one out and Brooke Howard's two-out double scored both runners. 

The Falcons took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third and extended the lead to 6-2 with three runs in the fourth. Claudia Utz had a two-run double in the fourth. 

The Eagles tied the game in the bottom of the fourth with four runs. Steien scored on a wild pitch to cut the lead to 6-3. Cristin Casey came in on a Kyra Lard sacrifice fly to make it 6-4 and Jordyn McCormack's two-out home run tie the game. 

Concordia Wisconsin scored seven runs on seven hits in the top of the eighth. Pozezinski had the go-ahead two-run double. Megan Bloyer and Julia Moker each had two-run singles in the inning. 

UWL finished with seven hits as Howard, McCormack and Casey each had two. Howard and McCormack had two RBI. Ally Eden took the loss, pitching 0.1 of an inning, allowing five hits, seven runs (six earned) and one walk. Elise Weinzierl started, going 7.0 innings, allowing eight hits, six runs (four earned) and three walks while striking out six.

Concordia Wisconsin had 15 hits in the opener with Pozezinski going 5-for-5 with three RBI and two runs. Sydney Erdmann and Madi Wheat each had three hits. Gianna Carone earned the win for the Falcons, pitching 4.1 innings, allowing two hits and three walks with one strikeout. Jasmine Freeze started, going 3.2 innings, allowing five hits, six runs and four walks while striking out five. 

UWL scored all seven of its runs in the top of the fourth in the nightcap. Marissa Pease's RBI single scored Lard with the game's first run. Steien had a two-run double to make it 3-0 and Casey delivered an RBI single for a 4-0 lead. Howard's two-run triple extended the lead to 6-0 and Lard finished the scoring with a run-scoring single. 

Concordia Wisconsin scored twice in the bottom of the fifth on Pozezinski's home run. 

UWL totaled 11 hits in the second game with Lard, McCormack and Pease each finishing with two. Howard and Steien each had two RBI. Remington Stark earned the complete-game victory. She went 7.0 innings, allowing eight hits, two runs and one walk with six strikeouts.

Concordia Wisconsin finished with eight hits as Gabbi Gaziano had a pair. Emma Shellstrom suffered the loss for the Falcons. She pitched 3.2 innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs with three strikeouts. 

UWL returns to action Saturday, March 2 with a pair of games in Rochester, Minnesota, facing Macalester College (Minn.) at 12 p.m. and St. Olaf College (Minn.) at 2:30 p.m.
