UWL Earns Pair of Wins in Rochester; Three Pitchers Combine on No-Hitter Versus St. Olaf

Rochester, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team won a pair of games Saturday afternoon. The Eagles earned a 5-1 win over Macalester College (Minn.) and 4-1 victory over St. Olaf College (Minn.) to improve to 3-3 on the season.

UWL took a 3-0 lead over Macalester (Minn.) in the top of the third. Cristin Casey walked to lead-off the inning and went to third on Brooke Howard's single. Howard stole second, but the next two batters were retired before Marissa Pease's three-run home run provided the game's first scoring.

After the Scots left the bases-loaded in the bottom of the third, the Eagles extended their lead to 5-0 with two runs in the top of the fourth inning. Lauren Winkler singled to start the inning and went to second on Aliyah Langrehr's sacrifice bunt. Lindsay Steien reached on an error with Winkler moving to third. Steien stole second with Winkler scoring on a Macalester (Minn.) error to make it 4-0. After Casey and Howard singled to load the bases, Steien came in on Kyra Lard's sacrifice bunt for a 5-0 lead.

Macalester (Minn.) scored its lone run in the bottom of the seventh on Mandy Morrical's single.

Elise Weinzierl earned the win for UWL, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing three hits, one run and one walk with seven strikeouts. Carmen Follette started, going 3.0 innings, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out three.

UWL totaled six hits with Howard and Pease each going 2-for-4.

Rileigh Morlock took the loss for Macalester (Minn.), going 4.0 innings, allowing six hits, five runs (three earned) and one walk while striking out five. Four different players recorded a hit for the Scots.

UWL recorded its 10th no-hitter in school history in its 4-1 victory over St. Olaf (Minn.) on Saturday. Madi Lee started for the Eagles, going 2.0 innings, allowing one run and two walks while striking out one. Remington Stark pitched 1.2 innings with three walks and four strikeouts while Brynne Bieri earned the victory, going 3.1 innings, allowing one walk with four strikeouts.

It marks the second straight season UWL has thrown a no-hitter after Stark and Ally Eden combined for one versus UW-Stout on April 22, 2023.

The Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first in Saturday's win over St. Olaf (Minn.). Jordyn McCormack singled with two outs and scored on a Pease single and St. Olaf (Minn.) error.

St. Olaf (Minn.) tied the game in the top of the second on a Maya Patty RBI groundout, but UWL tallied three runs in the bottom of the inning. The Oles scored after a walk, hit-by-pitch and sacrifice bunt. Steien reached on a fielder's choice with two outs for the Eagles in the second inning and went to second after Casey drew a walk. Howard's single scored Steien to give the Eagles a 2-1 lead. Lard then followed with a two-run triple to make it 4-1.

UWL finished with nine hits in the game as Howard went 2-for-4 and McCormack and Pease each finished 2-for-3.

Jaelyn Orth suffered the loss for St. Olaf (Minn.), pitching 1.2 innings. She allowed four hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks while striking out two.

UWL returns to action Saturday, March 9 opening its spring trip to Tucson, Arizona. The Eagles face Franklin and Marshall College (Pa.) at noon (Central) and St. John Fisher University (N.Y.) at 2:30 p.m. (Central).
