UWL Wins Season Opener at Augsburg; Robinson Nets First Career Victory as Head Coach

Box Score Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team opened its 2024 season with a 23-8 victory at Augsburg University (Minn.) Friday night at Edson Field. The Auggies drop to 0-2 on the season.

It is the first career victory for first-year UWL head coach Alexandra Robinson after serving as an assistant coach last season.

UWL scored the first two goals of the game on Friday with Britta Nelson scoring off a Megan Maloney assist at 12:09 and Megan Feeney scoring an unassisted goal at 11:56. Augsburg (Minn.) cut the lead to 2-1 on a Jade Wilson goal at 9:17. The teams traded the next five goals. Ava Schiltz scored a pair of goals for the Eagles while Alexa Hoffman tallied a pair for the Auggies. Nelson's goal with :19 left in the first period gave UWL a 5-3 lead after one.

Angie Olla extended the lead to 6-3 at 13:19 of the second quarter before Hoffman scored her third goal of the game at 11:26 to cut it to 6-4. Feeney and Wilson exchanged goals to make it 7-5 when UWL scored five straight to make it 12-5. Schiltz recorded a pair of goals in the run while Kiersten Pelletier, Maloney and Nelson also scoring. Wilson cut it to 12-6 with 3:39 remaining in the first half, but Feeney scored the next two goals to give the Eagles a 14-6 halftime advantage. 

UWL outscored Augsburg (Minn.), 9-2, in the second half as the Auggies could get no closer in the second half.

Schiltz led UWL with six goals while Feeney tallied five. Nelson recorded three goals while Mahoney and Pelletier were both registering one goal and two assists. Olla scored twice with Emily Wrobbel, Anna Jenson, Kara Stay, Joslyn Brotemarkle and Sydney Schmitz each scoring once. 

The Eagles recorded 43 shots and 19 ground balls. 

Stefani Rossi (two saves) and Abigale Furlano (four) each played a half with Rossi picking up the victory.

Wilson led Augsburg (Minn.) with four goals while Hoffman recorded three. The Auggies finished with 17 shots and 11 ground balls. Nicole Schuster had 12 saves. 

UWL returns to action Saturday, March 2 hosting Lake Forest College (Ill.) at 1 p.m. in its home opener at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex.
