Women's Basketball Upset Bid Comes Up Short at Nationally Ranked UW-Whitewater

Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team's upset bid of #10 ranked UW-Whitewater came up short Saturday night.

Kailee Meeker leads Eagles with 19 points
            
HOW DID IT HAPPEN
  • UW-Whitewater opened the game on a 9-2 run before UWL battled back to tie the game at 14 with 1:42 left in the first quarter. Kailee Meeker hit back-to-back three-pointers in the final :40 seconds of the first quarter to give the Eagles a 22-19 lead.
  • Bri McCurdy would hit a jumper on the first possession of the second quarter followed by a Katie Hildebrandt layup to give the Warhawks a 23-22 lead. Meeker and Lauryn Milne would then hit back-to-back three-pointers followed by two Meeker free throws to give the Eagles a 31-23 lead with 6:35 left in the half. The Warhawks would regain the lead at 34-33 on two free throws from Hildebrandt. UWL wold score seven of the final 11 points to lead 40-38 at halftime. 
  • Milne would hit a three-pointer to start a 13-2 run as the Eagles extended their lead to 53-40 with 5:47 left in the third quarter. UW-Whitewater would cut their deficit to 57-50 at the end of the three quarter on two free throws by Aleah Grundahl.
  • The Warhawks scored seven of the first nine points in the fourth quarter to cut their deficit to 59-57 with 6:56 left in the game. A three point play by Milne and a three-pointer from Katie Waukau would give the Eagles a 65-59 lead (4:55). The Warhawks and Eagles would trade baskets to make it 67-61 with 3:49 remaining. UW-Whitewater would score the final 12 points of the game for the final score of 73-67. 
     
FROM THE BOXSCORE
  • Meeker led three Eagles in double figures with 19 points while Milne added 15 points and Waukau chipped in 11 points. 
  • Paige Schumann finished with eight points, five rebounds and six assists. 
  • The Eagles finished the game shooting 24-of-64 (37.5%) including 10-of-33 (30.3%) from the three-point line. UWL was also nine-of-10 (90%) from the free throw line. 
  • Grundahl led the Warhawks with 39 points while Maggie Trautsch added eight points and a game high 13 points. 
  • As a team, the Warhawks shot 23-of-72 (31.9%) from the floor including five-of-34 (14.7%) from the three-point line. UW-Whitewater was also 22-of-30 (73.3%) from the free throw line.
