Second Half Comeback Leads UW-Oshkosh to Conference Win over UWL

Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football team, ranked 12th on this week's D3football.com Top-25 Poll, fell 34-33, at 20th-ranked UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon at J.J. Keller Field at Titan Stadium. The Eagles drop to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Titans improve to 3-2 overall and 1-1 in the conference. UW-Oshkosh snaps a four-game losing streak to UWL with the victory. 

UW-Oshkosh took the opening kickoff and a 7-0 lead with Justice Lovelace scoring on a three-yard run with 10:24 left in the first quarter. The Titans went 89 yards in 12 plays and 4:30. UWL responded on its first drive to tie the game. Gabe Lynch scored on a one-yard run with 3:21 remaining and Michael Stack's extra-point tied the game, 7-7. The Eagles converted three fourth-downs on the drive. UWL used 14 plays to go 72 yards in 6:58.

After forcing a Titans' punt, the Eagles took a 14-7 advantage with 12:40 left in the second quarter as Kyle Haas scored on a three-yard run. UWL went 45 yards in nine plays and 4:06. On the next possession, UW-Oshkosh's punter Walleye Ratliff was tackled in the end-zone by Brennan Goralski and Ashton Gondeck for a safety to make it 16-7. The Eagles took over at their own 47-yard line after the ensuing kickoff and extended their lead to 23-7 after Haas hit Braeden Ott with a six-yard touchdown pass with 7:21 remaining in the second quarter. The drive went 53 yards and 3:40 in seven plays. 

UW-Oshkosh punted on its next drive, but the punt was muffed with the Titans' Kenny Satori recovering the ball at the Eagles' 28-yard line. Three plays later, Cole Warren connected with Trae Tetzlaff for a 26-yard touchdown pass with 3:40 remaining to cut the lead to 23-14. 

UWL quickly responded on the next possession, going 76 yards in seven plays and 3:01 to take a 30-14 advantage as Haas threw an eight-yard touchdown pass to Jack Studer. With the touchdown catch, Studer tied Scott Burnoski's (2001-04) school record for career touchdown receptions (30). 

The lead remained, 30-14, at halftime.

Stack's 29-yard field goal with 9:12 remaining in the third quarter gave UWL a 33-14 lead. The Eagles took the second half kickoff, going 48 yards in 10 plays and 5:42. UW-Oshkosh scored on its first possession of the second half, using eight plays and 4:14 to go 90 yards with Warren scoring on a three-yard run with 4:51 left in the quarter to make it 33-20. The two-point conversion was missed. 

The teams traded punts on the next two possessions and UWL maintained its 33-20 lead after three quarters. Haas was intercepted by Connor Lund at the UW-Oshkosh 35-yard line with 12:12 left in the game. The Titans cut the lead to 33-27 with 6:19 left after Warren hit Dan Fynaardt on a four-yard touchdown pass. UW-Oshkosh went 59 yards in 14 plays and 5:53. The Titans converted a third-and-30 at the Eagles' 48-yard line to extend the drive.

UWL was forced to punt after Haas was sacked on third-and-three. UW-Oshkosh took over at its own 46-yard line with 4:08 remaining and used 10 plays and 3:07 to take a 34-33 lead as Warren threw a 16-yard touchdown pass to Tetzlaff on fourth-and-four with 1:01 left. Nolan Mobley's converted the extra-point to give the Titans a one-point lead. 

The Eagles drove to the Titans' 24-yard line, but Stack's 41-yard field goal missed on the final play of the game.  

UWL finished with 392 yards of offense, including 142 rushing and 250 passing. The Eagles had 24 first downs, went five-of-12 on third-down and three-of-three on fourth-down. UWL won the time of possession, 32:49 to 27:11, and were five-of-five in red-zone chances. 

Haas went 22-of-35 for 250 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Lynch totaled 67 yards rushing on 15 carries and one touchdown with Haas finishing with 31 yards rushing on 10 attempts and one touchdown. Studer caught six passes for 83 yards and one touchdown. Nine different players caught a pass. 

UW-Oshkosh totaled 396 yards with 102 rushing and 294 passing. The Titans finished with 21 first downs as they went seven-of-14 on third-down and two-of-three on fourth-down. UW-Oshkosh was four-of-four in the red-zone. 

Warren finished 26-of-42 for 294 yards and three touchdowns. He also rushed for a team-high 65 yards on six attempts and one touchdown. Lovelace totaled 45 yards rushing on 15 carries and one touchdown. Tetzlaff had eight receptions for 92 yards and two touchdowns. 

Tate Pitcher led UWL's defense with nine tackles while Trent Mullen and Ryan Daines each finished with seven. 

Kyle Dietzen led UW-Oshkosh with 11 tackles. 

UWL returns to action Saturday, October 19 at UW-Eau Claire at 11:30 a.m.
