UWL Earns Seventh Straight Win over UW-Eau Claire; Studer Sets School Record; Haas Three Touchdown Passes

Eau Claire, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse football team earned its first Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) win of the season with a 34-7 victory at UW-Eau Claire Saturday afternoon at Carson Park. The Eagles, ranked 22nd on this week's D3football.com Top-25 Poll, improve to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in the WIAC while the Blugolds drop to 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the conference. It marks UWL's seventh straight win over UW-Eau Claire. 

The seven points are the fewest for UW-Eau Claire against UWL since the Eagles' 42-7 victory on November 9, 2019.

UW-Eau Claire punted on the game's first drive and UWL used 10 plays and 4:33 to go 51-yards to take a 3-0 lead as Michael Stack connected on a 32-yard field goal with 7:22 left in the first quarter. After another Blugolds' punt, the Eagles drove to the UW-Eau Claire three-yard line, but Kyle Haas' fourth-down pass was broken up by Brady Hoffner.  

Three punts later, UWL took a 10-0 lead with 4:16 remaining in the second quarter after Haas hit Jack Studer with a nine-yard touchdown pass. The drive went 70 yards in eight plays and 4:20. Studer became UWL's career leader in touchdown receptions (31), breaking Scott Burnoski's (2001-04) record. 

UWL led, 10-0, at halftime.

Both teams punted on its second half possessions. The Eagles then went 89 yards in eight plays and 4:30 to extend their lead to 17-0 as Haas connected with Jack Janke for a 12-yard touchdown pass with 7:14 left in the third quarter. UWL did not have a third-down on the drive. UW-Eau Claire was forced to punt with UWL taking over at its own 21-yard line. Haas threw his third touchdown of the game with :17 remaining in the quarter, this one from 14-yards out to Keaton Arendt. The drive went 79 yards and nine plays in 4:45.

Trent Mullen intercepted UW-Eau Claire's Harry Roubidoux on the next play from scrimmage at the Blugolds' 23-yard line. Stack extended the lead to 27-0 with 13:44 left in the game with a 42-yard field goal. After another Blugolds' punt, Gabe Lynch gave the Eagles a 34-0 lead with 9:06 remaining with a 16-yard touchdown run. UWL used 2:29 and five plays for 65-yards. 

UW-Eau Claire got on the scoreboard with 5:10 left on Roubidoux's 14-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Garside with 5:10 left. The Blugolds went 75 yards in seven plays and 3:56.

UWL finished with 492 yards with 232 rushing and 260 passing. The Eagles had 25 first downs in the game, were three-of-11 on third-down and one-of-two on fourth-down. UWL won the time of possession, 36:58 to 23:02. 

Haas went 24-of-32 passing for 260 yards and three touchdowns while also rushing for 73 yards on eight carries. Lynch led UWL with 91 yards rushing on 12 attempts with one touchdown. Studer caught eight passes for 132 yards and one touchdown. Arendt and Janke each had four catches for 38 yards and one touchdown. 

UW-Eau Claire was held to 176 yards of offense, including 28 rushing and 148 passing. The Blugolds had seven first downs in the game while going four-of-12 on third-down. The seven first downs by the Blugolds are the fewest by a UWL opponent since UW-Eau Claire finished with seven in UWL's 42-7 victory on November 9, 2019.

Roubidoux finished 16-of-24 for 145 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Jacob Donohue had 18 yards rushing on six carries while Franko Williams led the Blugolds with two receptions for 57 yards. Garside had four catches for 52 yards.  

Ryan Daines led UWL with five tackles while Bodie Schanhofer had four. Ross Gengler, Tate Pitcher and Nicholas Jorndt each finished with three tackles. Mullen and Tyr Severson each recorded an interception. UWL had 5.0 tackles for loss. 

Peyton Erikson had a game-high 11 tackles for UW-Eau Claire with Walker Korish finishing with nine.

UWL returns to action Saturday, October 26 hosting 10th-ranked UW-River Falls at 1 p.m. for Band Day.
