Men's Track and Field Opens 2024 Season With Top Finish at Pat Healy Classic; Schroeder Sets School Record

- The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse Men's Track and Field team opened the 2024 season by hosting the Pat Healy Classic Saturday afternoon.

THE BASICS
  • Results: UWL finished with first with 323 points while UW-Stout was second (83 points), UW-River Falls third (39 points), Viterbo University fourth (10 points) and St. Mary's University (Minn.) (7 points) fifth.
  • Location: UWL Fieldhouse, La Crosse, Wis.
  • Up next: The Eagles will travel to Whitewater, Wis. to compete in the UW-Whitewater Squig Converse Invitational Friday, January 19 and Saturday January 20. Both days are scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m.

THE RESULTS

   
FIELD EVENTS
  • High Jump - Nathan Andringa finished first with a jump of  6-6 3/4.
  • Pole Vault - Logan Larson finished second in the pole vault (15-7) while Ashton Moody was fourth (15-1). 
  • Long Jump - UWL had three of the top four finishers in the long jump with Andrew Hermes finishing first with a jump of 22-10. Triton Schmidt finished second (22-7 1/4) while Sebastian Jefferson was fourth (21-10 3/4).
  • Triple Jump - The top four finishers in the triple jump were all Eagles with William Cady finishing first (47-5 1/4). In second place was Nick Crary (46-10) while Carter Pearson was third (45-9) and Brody Kluge was fourth (45-0 1/4).
  • Shot Put - Ben Youngworth led the Eagle throwers as he won the shot put with a throw of 50-6 1/4. Ethan Welch was second with a throw of 49-5 3/4 while Spencer Prats finished third (48-2 1/2).
  • Weight Throw - UWL had three of the top five finishers in the weight throw with Aiden Williams finishing second (57-0), Logan Powers third (53-0 3/4) and Prats fifth (48-3 1/2). 
    TRACK EVENTS 
  • Mile - Zach Slevin won the mile with a time of 4:17.34 while Luke Chaffin was second with a 4:18.95. 
  • 60-meter hurdles - Chad Thompson Jr. and Lukas Johnson were the top two finishers for the Eagles in the 60-meter hurdles. Thompson finished third (8.41) while Johnson was fourth (8.43). In the prelims, Luke Schroeder set the school record with a time of 7.92 breaking Marcus Walgrave (2006) and Austin Bates (2019) record of 8.10.
  • 60-meter dash - UWL had four of the top five finishers in the 60-meter dash with Ryder Smith running the fastest time of 6.86. In second place was Ethan Turbeville with a time of 7.01 while Spencer Reichart was fourth (7.12) and Paul Lough finished fifth (7.20). 
  • 600-meter - Davis Wenthe led the top three Eagle finishers in the 600-meter run with a time of 1:19.80. Finishing second was Dirk Lueck (1:20.40) and Andrew Hackbarth was third (1:21.70)..
  • 400-meter - Chase Doornink won the 400-meter run on Saturday in a time of 48.84. Jacob Hohman was second (49.38) and Addison Hill third (49.94) for the Eagles.
  • 800-meter - Four of the top five finishers in the 800-meter run were in a UWL uniform as Parker Heintz took home the event title in a time of 1:54.81. In third place was Parker Huhn (1:57.34) while Owen Klaus was fourth (1:57.35) and Elias Ritzke came in fifth (1:57.92).
  • 200-meter - Schroeder won the 200-meter run (21.63) as UWL had the top eight finishers. Sam Blaskowski finished second (21.63), Collin Conzemius third (22.06), Smith fourth (22.33) and Caden Pearce fifth (22.69). Schroeder and Blaskowki's time of 21.63 is the third fastest time in UWL history. Blaskowski has the school record of 21.13 set in 2023 while Andrew Rock has the second fastest time at 21.34 (2003). 
  • 3000-meter - Like in the 200 meter, UWL dominated 3000-meter run as they had the top nine finishers. Ethan Gregg won the event with a time of 8:10.08 with Grant Matthai finishing right behind him with a time of 8:10.86. In third place was Adam Loenser (8:11.37) while Aidan Matthai was fourth (8:12.01) and Michael Madoch finished fifth (8:16.02). Gregg, Matthai, Loenser and Matthai's times rank second through fifth on UWL's all-time list. Gregg has the school record of 8:01.23 set in 2023. 
  • 4x400 relay - The relay team of Conzemius, Wenthe, Doornink and Pearce won the 4x400 relay in a time of 3:18.36. In second place was the relay team of Hackbarth, Hohman, Hill and Lueck (3:18.46) while the relay team of Heintz, Ritzke, Klaus and Cael Schoemann finished third (3:28.29).
