West Salem, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team extended its winning streak to six with a doubleheader sweep of UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon at West Salem High School. The Eagles won game one, 7-5, and the nightcap, 8-5.
Madi Lee earned the win in game one.
The wins move UWL to 22-11 overall and 7-3 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action while UW-Stevens Point falls to 20-10 on the year and 4-6 in the conference.
The doubleheader was played at West Salem High School with UWL's North Campus Field closed due to flooding.
UW-Stevens Point took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game one as it recorded three hits. After a strikeout to start the game, the Pointers got RBI singles from Sara Traxel and Trinity Otto. UWL would take a 4-2 lead in the second inning with four runs on five hits and an error.
Anna Jensen led off the second with a double and scored on a single by
Madi O'Brien.
Jordan Schultz then doubled to score O'Brien to tie the game.
Mariah Wick would reach via a bunt single to put runners on first and second. With two outs,
Kyra Lard doubled to score both Wick and Schultz to give the Eagles a 4-2 lead.
The lead did not last long for UWL as UW-Stevens Point scored two runs in the third to tie the game at 4-4. Traxel drove in a run with a single while Jesse Klicker reached via a fielding error that scored a run. UWL would regain the lead in the bottom half of the third inning as Wick drove in Schultz with a single. The Pointers put their first two batters on base in the fourth inning to force an Eagles' pitching change. Emmie Cibrario singled for the Pointers to score a run and tie the game at 5-5.
Anna Jensen was 2-for-4 with two runs in game one.
Abbey Bosch led off the fourth inning by being hit-by-pitch. Lard hit her second double of the game to move Bosch to third. Bosch scored on a groundout by
Jordyn McCormack to put UWL up 6-5. The Eagles would add an insurance run in the sixth inning as they loaded the bases to start the inning.
Marissa Pease grounded into a double play to score Bosch, who had reached on a fielding error, to give UWL a 7-5 lead. The Pointers loaded the bases with one out in the seventh inning but
Elise Weinzierl come on in relief for
Madi Lee to record a strikeout and a fly out to end the game.
Lee (3-1) came on in relief for Weinzierl to earn the win for UWL. Lee pitched 3.1 innings and gave up five hits but kept the Pointers off the scoreboard. After pitching the first 3.0 innings, Weinzierl earned the save by getting the final two outs of the game. In total, Weinzierl allowed five runs (four earned) on sevens hits and one walk while striking out five in 3.2 innings.
As a team, the Eagles finished with 10 hits including three from Lard and two from both Jensen and Wick. Lard drove in two runs while Jensen scored twice and Wick had a RBI and a run scored.
Makenna Tkach (7-5) suffered the loss on the mound for the Pointers as she allowed two runs on four hits in 3.0 innings. UW-Stevens Point had 12 hits including two from Maddie Candre, Sophia Heckendorf, Traxel and Otto.
In the nightcap, UWL scored first as it got two runs on two hits in the first inning. Bosch led off with a single and scored on Lard's triple. One out later,
Marissa Pease drove in Lard with a ground out to second. UW-Stevens Point responded in the second inning with five runs on four hits and an error. Cibrario drove in a run with a sacrifice fly while Heckendorf's triple scored two and Candre and Klicker each singled to score a run to give the Pointers a 5-2 lead. The Eagles got two runs back in their half of the second inning as
Megan Scheidt and Bosch hit back-to-back doubles to score two runs.
UWL added two more runs in the third inning as Pease and
Ella Harris hit back-to-back home runs to take a 6-5 lead. Pease and Harris would strike again in the fifth inning as Pease led off the inning with a double and scored on a double by Harris. O'Brien followed with a single which moved Harris to third. Schultz then grounded out to score Harris and give the Eagles an 8-5 lead.
Megan Scheidt was 2-3 with RBI and run scored in game two.
Ally Eden (6-3) came on in relief for the Eagles to earn the win and allowed three hits and no runs in 5.2 innings of work.
Remington Stark made the start for the Eagles as she went 1.1 innings, giving up five runs (three earned) and two walks while striking out one.
UWL once again finished with double digit hits as it had 11. Bosch led the way going 3-for-4 with one run and an RBI. Pease, Harris and Scheidt each finished with two hits for the Eagles while Lard had one hit and two walks.
Ashley Zygowski (11-3) came on in relief for UW-Stevens Point and suffered the loss as she allowed two runs on three hits and one walk while striking out two in 2.1 innings of work. Klicker led the Pointers offensively, going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
UWL returns to action on Thursday, May 4 when it travels to UW-Eau Claire for a WIAC doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 4 p.m. This doubleheader was scheduled for Sunday, April 30, but was postponed due to predicted inclement weather.
