Eau Claire, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team defeated UW-Eau Claire 16-7 Wednesday night at Simpson Field. The Eagles are now 12-4 overall while the Blugolds fall to 6-5 on the season.
UWL would score four first quarter goals to lead 4-1 at the end of the first period. In the second minute of the game,
Ava Schiltz would give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Regan Werner of UW-Eau Claire would then tie the game at 1-1 with 11:48 on the clock. The score would remain that way until the 12th minute of the first quarter when Schiltz would score again for the Eagles.
Megan Feeney would score goals three and four in the final two minutes of the opening period. Feeney's first goal was assisted by
Lauren Schwartz and her second goal was assisted by Schiltz.
Lauren Schwartz had 4 goals and 1 assist.
Feeney would score her third straight goal to start the second quarter on an assist by
Kiersten Pelletier to give the Eagles a 5-1 lead. Schwartz would then extend the Eagles lead to 6-1 with 13:01 remaining in the second quarter on an unassisted goal. Werner would score a second goal for the Blugolds with 11:20 remaining in the first half. UWL would then score three straight goals including two by Schiltz and one by
Grace Willmott to give the Eagles a 9-2 lead at halftime.
Two minutes into the second half, Werner would score her third goal of the game for the Blugolds to cut their deficit to 9-3. Oliva Wight would give the Eagles a 10-3 lead while
MacKenzie Crouse would make it 11-3 with 1:10 left in the third quarter. Schiltz assisted on Crouse's goal.
UW-Eau Claire would open the fourth quarter by scoring two goals in the first minute by Devon Crews and Alexie Romanelli. Schwartz would make it 12-5 UWL with her second goal of the game with 11:32 remaining. UW-Eau Claire would score the next two goals to make it 12-7 with 8:52 left on the clock; however, that would be as close as the Blugolds would get as UWL scored the final four goals of the game. Schwartz scored twice while Crouse and Schiltz each had one of the final two goals for the Eagles.
UWL finished the contest with a 39-17 advantage in shots including 28 of them being on goal. Schiltz led the Eagles with five goals and two assists while Schwartz had four goals and one assist. Also scoring multiple goals for UWL was Feeney with three and Crouse with two. Abigale Furlano (8-2) recorded the win in goal for the Eagles as she finished with five saves.
Werner led the Blugolds with four goals on four shots while Romanelli had two goals. Alexandra Shea suffered the loss in goal for the Blugolds as she finished with 12 saves.
UWL will return home for its final regular season game on Saturday, April 29 hosting Aurora University (Ill.) at 1 p.m.
