Baseball Sweeps Non-Conference Doubleheader Over St. Olaf

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Northfield, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team picked up a non-conference doubleheader sweep Thursday afternoon as they defeated St. Olaf College (Minn.), 20-5 (7 innings) and 11-5 (6 innings). The Eagles, ranked 25th on this week's D3baseball.com Top-25 Poll, improve to 18-5 on the season while the Oles fall to 6-11 overall.

UWL started out fast as it scored four runs in each of the first three innings in Thursday's opener. UWL got four straight singles to start the game including run scoring singles from Anthony Vivian and Mac Born. Vivian would score on a wild pitch while Born scored on a single by Tim Urlaub to give UWL a 4-0 lead.

St.Olaf (Minn.) got a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI single by Joey Glampe. In the second inning, UWL's Jack Olver doubled to score Logan Pye who had singled to start the inning. Vivian hit his 10th home run of the season to score Olver to give UWL a 7-1 lead. Born followed up with a home run of his own to make it 8-1. Olver would drive in two more runs in the third inning with a single while Vivian's single scored two runs to make it 12-2 after three innings. 

After three straight walks to start the Eagles' fourth, Eli Roberts singled to score a run while Jordan Williams and James Rae each scored on a wild pitch to give UWL a 15-2 lead. In the fifth, UWL scored two runs on three hits including another RBI single from Urlaub. St. Olaf (Minn.) would score two runs in the fifth inning on an RBI single by Avery von Herrmann while Cameron Hammonds scored on a balk. The Oles made it 17-5 in the sixth inning when Christopher Woodside drove in a run with a single. The Eagles would cap the scoring in the seventh inning as Rae drove in a run with a sacrifice fly while Roberts hit a two-run home run for his first of the season. 

As a team, the Eagles finished with 22 hits including 10 different players recording a hit in game one. The 22 hits in a game is the most since the Eagles had 22 hits against UW-Whitewater on May 12, 2022. Olver led the way with four hits while Vivian and Urlaub each had three. Pye, Roberts, Born, Ty Hamilton and Jack Moran each had two hits for the Eagles. Vivian drove in five runs while Roberts and Olver each had three RBIs. 

Isaiah Katz (2-0) earned the win on the mound for the Eagles as he allowed two runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out three. Carter Tower, Aidan Baccus and Jake Clauson each pitched an inning for UWL.

The Oles had 11 hits as a team including Glampe who was 2-for-2 while Frank Lavin was 1-for-1 with three walks. Derek Hansen (0-2) suffered the loss for St.Olaf as he allowed four runs on five hits in 1.0 innings of work. 

In the night cap, the Eagles jumped out to a 4-0 lead as they scored four runs on three hits and an error. Pye started the game by reaching on a fielding error and scored on Olver's fifth homerun of the season. Vivian then singled and it was Born's time for a 2-run homer which is his first of the season. St. Olaf quickly cut their deficit to 4-3 in the bottom of the first as they scored three unearned runs on two hits. With the score still 4-3 in the fourth, Moran rached on a walk and stole second. Pye then walked and both would advance a base on a ground out by Olver. Vivian drove in a run on a ground out of his own while Born made in 6-3 with his single.

St. Olaf would get two runs back in the fifth inning as Glampe drew a bases loaded walk and Lavin scored on a passed ball to make it 6-5. UWL would then put the game out of reach as they scored five runs on three hits in the sixth inning. Moran led off with a single and advanced to second on a walk by Pye. Vivian then loaded the bases when he was hit by a pitch. Born followed that up with a sacrifice fly that scored Moran to make it 7-5. Hamilton then doubled to score both Pye and Vivan. George Seaman then hit his seventh home run of the season to score Hamilton and make it 11-5, Eagles. 

UWL would have seven batters record at least one hit in game two as they finished with 10 total hits. Born led the Eagles by going 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a run scored while Hamilton was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.Olver and Seaman both drove in two runs and scored a run for the Eagles.

Owen Deprez (3-1) picked up the win for the Eagles has he went 4.0 innings and allowed four runs on two hits, four walks and five strikeouts. Caleb Matl pitched the last two innings for the Eagles as he gave up one run on two hits and three walks while striking out two.

St.Olaf recorded four hits in game two with Sam Lavin leading the way by going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Justin Isaacson (0-1) suffered the loss for the Oles as he allowed four runs on five hits in 2.0 innings. 

UWL will return to action on Sunday, April 16 when they host the College of St. Scholastica (Minn.) for a non-conference doubleheader at Copeland Park. First pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
