UWL Sweeps Saint Mary's; McCormack Seven Hits in Twinbill; Weinzierl Earns Both Wins

Winona, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a doubleheader sweep at Saint Mary's University (Minn.) Sunday afternoon at SMU Field. The Eagles took the opener, 7-0, and the nightcap, 9-6. UWL improves to 10-7 on the season while Saint Mary's (Minn.) is 6-8. 

The Eagles raced out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Abbey Bosch singled to start the game and went to second on Kyra Lard's single. Jordyn McCormack's single loaded the bases. After a fielder's choice, Lard scored the game's first run on Jordan Schultz' single to left field. McCormack later scored an unearned run as Anna Jensen reached on a Saint Mary's (Minn.) error.

UWL added to its lead in the top of the third. Lard singled with one out, stole second, and scored on a McCormack single for a 3-0 lead. Madi O'Brien hit a two-run home run in the top of the sixth to make it 5-0 and the Eagles added two more runs in the seventh with McCormack scoring on a wild pitch and Schultz coming in on Jensen's run-scoring single. 

Elise Weinzierl, Remington Stark and Madi Lee combined on a six-hit shutout. Weinzierl earned the win, pitching 4.2 innings, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out five. Stark went 1.1 innings, allowing one hit and one walk with two strikeouts while Lee pitched 1.0 inning with one strikeout.

UWL totaled 12 hits in the opener with Lard going 3-for-4 with two runs and McCormack finishing 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Jensen went 2-for-4 with an RBI while O'Brien had two RBI. 

Naleya Bork suffered the loss for Saint Mary's (Minn.), going 6.0 innings, allowing 11 hits and five runs (four earned) with two strikeouts. Peyton Berg went 2-for-3 for the Cardinals. 

UWL scored four runs in the top of the first in Sunday's nightcap. With one out, Lard walked on scored on McCormack's two-run home run. After Schultz singled and stole second, Marissa Pease hit a two-run home run to make it 4-0. 

Saint Mary's (Minn.) got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning with Naleya Bork scoring on Cassie Sutor's two-out single. 

Both teams scored a run in the second. UWL took a 5-1 lead with Lard coming in on a Schultz single. Saint Mary's (Minn.) cut it to 5-2 as Mackenzie Carey scored an unearned run on a UWL error. 

The Cardinals took their first of the game with four runs in the bottom of the third. Sutor's single scored Bork to cut the lead to 5-3 and Berg's two-run double knocked in Sutor and Abbie Stigler to the game to 5-5. Saint Mary's (Minn.) took a 6-5 lead on a UWL error.

The Eagles quickly responded with a run in the top of the fourth to force a 6-6 tie on a Pease single to score McCormack. UWL tallied three runs in the top of the sixth after Lard and McCormack singled and scored on Pease' three-run home run. 

Weinzierl picked up the victory in game two, going 3.0 innings in relief, allowing two hits while striking out three. Ally Eden started, going 2.1 innings, allowing six hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks with one strikeout. Lee pitched 1.2 innings, allowing one hit, two runs (one earned) and one walk. 

UWL finished with 15 hits, including McCormack going 4-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Pease went 3-for-4 with two runs, two home runs and six RBI. Schultz went 3-for-4 while Lard went 2-for-4 with three runs. 

Sarah Kraus took the loss for Saint Mary's (Minn.), pitching a complete-game, allowing 15 hits, nine runs and two walks with one strikeout in 7.0 innings. The Cardinals had nine hits with Bork going 3-for-4 with two runs. Sutor, Berg and Riley Hall each had two hits while Sutor and Berg having two RBI.

UWL returns to action Wednesday, March 29 at Wartburg College (Iowa) for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
