UWL Scores 28 Runs in Doubleheader Sweep at Wartburg; Records 11 Extra-Base Hits

Waverly, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse softball team earned a doubleheader sweep at Wartburg College (Iowa) Tuesday afternoon at Lynes Field. The Eagles, now 12-7 on the season, took the opener, 15-10, and the nightcap, 15-13. The Knights drop to 8-9 on the season.

The Eagles raced out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first in Tuesday's opener. Abbey Bosch walked and Jordyn McCormack singled leading to Jordan Schultz' three-run home run. The Knights tallied four unearned runs in the bottom of the first. Kaylie Springer scored on a Sydney Fellows' RBI groundout to make it 3-1. Lauren Frerichs followed with an RBI single to knock in Reegan Deputy to cut the lead to 3-2. Kailey Maksim later hit a two-out two-run single scoring Frerichs and Ella Link to give Wartburg (Iowa) a 4-3 lead. 

UWL quickly responded with five runs in the top of the second. Madi O'Brien doubled to start the inning and went to third on Megan Scheidt's bunt single. O'Brien stole home to force a 4-4 tie as Scheidt advanced to third on a Wartburg (Iowa) error. Scheidt scored the go-ahead run on a Bosch single to make it 5-4. Marissa Pease later singled to score Kyra Lard to give UWL a 6-4 lead. Anna Jensen's sacrifice fly scored McCormack and Isabel Queenan's RBI single knocked in Schultz to make it 8-4. Wartburg (Iowa) scored twice in the bottom of the second. Both runs were unearned with RBI singles from Fellows and Frerichs. 

With a pair of runs in the top of the third, UWL extended its lead to 10-6. Scheidt singled with one out, stole second and third and scored on a Bosch single. McCormack's two-out single later scored Bosch to make it 10-6.

The Eagles added three runs in the top of the fourth. O'Brien's single scored pinch-runner Joette Kassa to extend the lead to 11-6. Kassa came in for Pease who had singled to start the fourth inning. Bosch later hit a two-run single knocking in Jensen and O'Brien for a 13-6 advantage. 

The Knights responded with four runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Fellows had a two-run double to cut the lead to 13-8 followed by a Frerichs single to make it 13-9. Link later had a sacrifice fly to make it a three-run game. 

In the top of the fifth, Hailey Jibben's two-run double scored Schultz and Jensen to give UWL a 15-10 lead. Wartburg (Iowa) cut it to 15-11 in the bottom of the fifth with a run scoring on a passed ball. 

UWL had 19 hits in Tuesday's opener with eight starters recorded at least one. Bosch went 4-for-4 with four RBI and two runs while McCormack finished 3-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Pease went 3-for-4 with an RBI and O'Brien finished 3-for-4 with two runs. Scheidt went 2-for-4 with two runs. Remington Stark earned the victory, pitching 1.0 inning, allowing two hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks while striking out one. Elise Weinzierl started, going 2.0 innings, allowing seven hits, six runs (all unearned) and one walk. 

Wartburg (Iowa) finished with 11 hits in the opener as Frerichs went 4-for-4 with three RBI and one run. Deputy was 3-for-5 with three runs while Fellows was 2-for-5 with four RBI and two runs. Ashley Nelson took the loss, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing nine hits, eight runs and two walks with one strikeout. 

The second game started with Pease hitting a three-run home run in the top of the first to give UWL a 3-0 lead. Bosch singled to start the game and went to third on McCormack's double as both came in on Pease's home run. Wartburg (Iowa) scored four times in the bottom of the first on Fellows' two-run double and Link's two-run home run. 

The Knights extended their lead to 9-3 with five runs in the bottom of the second. Deputy and Sydney Illg each hit solo home runs in the inning while Frerichs hit a two-run home run. 

UWL cut it to 9-5 in the top of the third on Lard's solo home run and an RBI single from Schultz. The Eagles scored eight times on four hits and five Knights' errors in the top of the fourth. Lard's two-run home run cut the lead to 9-7. Pease hit an RBI single to make it 9-8 and UWL scored the tying run on a throwing error with Schultz coming into the plate. Nicole Zoellner later walked with the bases-loaded to give UWL a 10-9 lead. The Eagles scored three more runs on a pair of Knights' errors. 

Wartburg (Iowa) cut it to 13-11 in the bottom of the seventh on Tarah Wehde's RBI single and Alexis Larson's run-scoring double. The Knights loaded the bases with no outs, but Stark struck out three straight hitters to secure the win. 

UWL had 15 hits in the nightcap with McCormack going 4-for-5 with three runs. Pease went 3-for-5 with one run and four RBI while Lard finished 3-for-5 with two runs and three RBI. Ally Eden earned the victory, going 1.1 innings, allowing four hits and three runs. Stark picked up the save, pitching 1.0 inning with one walk and three strikeouts. 

Wartburg (Iowa) also finished with 15 hits. Link and Larson both went 3-for-4. Kennedy Lape suffered the loss, allowing two hits, four runs (all unearned) and one walk. 

UWL returns to action Saturday, April 1 hosting the University of Dubuque (Iowa) in the Eagles' home opener. First pitch of the doubleheader set for 2 p.m. at North Campus Field.
