UWL Falls in Double Overtime at UW-Stout

Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell, 95-90 in double overtime, at UW-Stout Wednesday night in Johnson Fieldhouse. The Eagles drop to 17-6 overall and 6-6 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blue Devils improve to 17-6 overall and 9-3 in the conference. 

With the victory, UW-Stout stays tied for the league lead with UW-Whitewater. The Blue Devils snapped an eight-game losing streak to the Eagles with the win. UWL remains in fifth-place in the conference standings with two games remaining.

The game was tied, 4-4, when Lauryn Milne's three-point field goal gave UWL a 7-4 lead. After Amanda Giesen's layup cut the lead to 7-6, UWL's Alana Gilles hit a layup and Kyah Steiner a three-pointer to give the Eagles a 12-6 lead. UW-Stout cut the deficit to 12-8 when UWL went on a 7-2 run to end the quarter for a 19-10 advantage. Carly Coulthart made a three-pointer with 1:22 remaining for a 17-10 lead and Gabby Ritchie's hook shot made it 19-10.

UWL led 25-15 with 7:24 left in the second quarter when it went on a 6-0 run to make it 31-15 on a Kailee Meeker jumper with 5:44 remaining. The Eagles took their largest lead of the game at 33-16 with 5:07 left on a Milne jumper. UW-Stout scored the next six points to cut the deficit to 33-22 on a Raegan Sorensen jumper, but Aaliyah McMillan's three-point field goal gave UWL a 36-22 advantage. The Blue Devils finished the half on a 7-2 run to the Eagles' lead to 38-29.  

Steiner's layup with 4:35 remaining in the third quarter gave UWL a 46-31 lead, but UW-Stout went on a 10-2 run to cut the lead to 48-41 on a Sorensen three-pointer with 1:15 left. Steiner's three-point play extended the Eagles lead to 51-41, but a Giesen jumper and Sorensen layup cut the lead to 51-45 after three quarters. 

The Eagles maintained the lead in the fourth quarter, including 62-57 with 4:10 left on a Gilles' layup, but a 5-0 run by the Blue Devils tied the game at 62-62 with 3:00 remaining after a pair of Elissa Lodermeier free throws. Gilles made two free throws with 2:31 left to give UWL a 66-64 lead, but Sorensen hit a three-pointer with 2:18 remaining to give UW-Stout its first lead since the opening quarter. Coulthart responded with a three-point field goal of her own to give the Eagles a 69-67 lead with 2:01 left before Anna Mutch tied the game on a jumper with 1:33 remaining. Sorensen gave UW-Stout a 71-69 lead with two free throws with :46 left, but after a pair of UWL timeouts, Coulthart connected on another three-pointer to give the Eagles a 72-71 lead with :26 remaining. After a pair of UW-Stout fouls, Paige Schumann made one-of-two at the line with :23 left to make it 73-71. The Blue Devils turned the ball over and Gilles made one-of-two at the line with :14 remaining to give the Eagles a 74-71 lead. Sorensen's three-point was blocked by Schumann, but Allison Letcher hit a three-pointer with :05 left to force overtime.

Mutch scored on a jumper and Haylee Yaeger made a three-point field goal to open the first overtime and give UW-Stout a 79-74 lead. The Blue Devils took a 85-80 lead with :36 left on two free throws from Sorensen, but Meeker's three-pointer with :22 remaining cut it to 85-83. Coulthart was fouled after recording a steal and converted both free throws with :12 left to tie the game, 85-85. Mutch missed a potential game-winning jumper at the buzzer. 

UWL took a 89-87 lead with 3:03 left in the second extra session on a Milne layup and steal, but Lodermeier's jumper with 2:29 remaining tied the game. Mutch gave UW-Stout a 91-89 lead on a jumper with :37 left after a UWL missed three-point attempt. Milne made one-of-two free throws with :21 remaining to cut the lead to 91-90 when Sorensen then made two free throws with :16 left to make it 93-90. The Eagles missed a potential game-tying three-pointer with :06 left and Lodermeier made two free throws with :03 remaining for the final margin.

UWL shot 43.7% from the field on Wednesday, including 29.0% (nine-of-31) from three-point range. The Eagles shot 73.1% (19-of-26) at the free throw line. Steiner led five players in double figures, finishing with 18 points. Milne totaled 16 points while Gilles finished with 15, Coulthart 13 and Meeker 12. Gilles and Coulthart tied for the team lead with seven rebounds each. 

UW-Stout shot 46.2% from the field, including 31.6% (six-of-19) from three-point range, and 85.3% (29-of-34) at the line. The Blue Devils were six-of-six at the line in the second overtime. Sorensen led UW-Stout with 30 points, going 10-of-10 at the free throw line. Mutch finished with 18 points, Giesen 16, Lodermeier 13 and Yaeger 10. Yaeger had a game-high nine rebounds while Sorensen and Mutch each added eight. 

UWL returns to action Saturday, February 11 hosting UW-Oshkosh at 3 p.m. for Senior Day.
