Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track & field team leads after the first day of competition at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships (presented by Culver's) Friday night in Johnson Fieldhouse. The Eagles totaled 102.0 points on Friday with UW-Oshkosh second with 67.0 and UW-Stout third with 28.0.
UW-Whitewater is in fourth-place (26.0) followed by UW-Eau Claire (23.0), UW-Stevens Point (13.0), UW-Platteville (11.0) and UW-River Falls (2.0).
The Eagles'
Addison Hill won the 400-meter dash (49.10) on Friday with
Chase Doornink second (49.27),
Payton Flood fifth (49.56) and
Tyler Backes sixth (49.64). Hill is the first UWL sprinter to claim the league title since Ross Denman won four straight (2014-17).
UWL's
Ethan Gregg captured the 5,000-meter run (14:45.38) with teammate
Adam Loenser second (14:45.47). It marks UWL's fourth championship in the last five seasons. Thomas Schultz took the title in 2018 and 2019 and Tyler Nault in 2020.
Corey Fairchild placed fifth (14:54.78) on Friday,
Ben Stangel eighth (15:06.35) and Zach Levin 20th (15:46.73).
Logan Larson took the pole vault (16-0 1/2) title with
JT Zell fourth (15-6 1/2) and
Ashton Moody eighth (14-6 3/4).
Jacob Wodushek finished tied for 16th (13-7). Larson is the first UWL athlete to win the pole vault crown since Jeffery Hill won back-to-back championships in 2014 and 2015.
Sam Blaskowski finished second (23-7 1/2) in the long jump while teammate
Triton Schmidt was third (23-4 1/2) and
Cameron Sorenson fourth (23-1 3/4).
Nick Crary placed ninth (22-1 3/4),
Andrew Hermes 11th (21-5 1/4),
Nolan Seaberg 19th (20-8 1/2) and
William Cady 22nd (20-3 3/4).
Aidan Matthai finished fourth (4:12.24),
Christopher Wolfe fifth (4:12.44),
Michael Madoch seventh (4:13.36) and
Elias Ritzke 11th (4:22.94) in the mile run.
UWL's
Bryce Sitko placed seventh (48-2),
Ethan Welch eighth (47-10),
Kyle Peters ninth (47-9) and
Spencer Prats 12th (45-8) in the shot put.
The distance medley relay of
Parker Heintz,
Luke Vance,
Jayden Zywicki and
Logan Bell finished fourth (10:18.01).
Seaberg leads the heptathlon after four events on Friday with 2,918 points. The Eagles'
Bryant Yanke is in eighth-place (2,504)
Joseph Jensen in 15th (2,286) and
Ben Jones in 18th (1,926). The heptathlon included the 60-meter dash, long jump, shot put and high jump on Friday and will conclude on Saturday with the 60-meter hurdles, pole vault and 1,000-meter run.
In preliminary action on the track, Blaskowski (6.65),
Ryder Smith (6.85) and
Spencer Reichart (6.90) advanced to Saturday's 60-meter dash final. Blaskowski broke his own National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III record with his preliminary time of 6.65. He ran a national record 6.67 at the USA Track & FIeld (USATF) Indoor Championships on February 18 in Albuquerque, New Mexico.
Terrance Cottreell-Roberson (7.08),
Carter Kummet (7.08) and Ashton Kummet (7.25) failed to advance to the final.
Luke Schroeder advanced to Saturday's 60-meter hurdles final with a preliminary time of 8.37.
Carson Reilly (8.55),
Lukas Johnson (8.55) and
Chad Thompson Jr. (8.63) failed to advance in the 60-meter hurdles.
The WIAC Championships continue Saturday, February 25 starting at 10:20 a.m.
