UWL Wins Seventh Straight WIAC Championship; Three Capture Individual Titles

UWL won its seventh straight WIAC title Saturday afternoon.

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team won its seventh straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship (presented by Culver's) Saturday at Quandt Fieldhouse. The Eagles finished with 161.0 team points while UW-Eau Claire and UW-Whitewater tied for second with 125.0. 

UW-Platteville was fourth (91.0) followed by UW-Oshkosh fifth (71.0) and UW-Stevens Point sixth (54.5).

It is UWL's 22nd (1994, 1998-99, 2000-11, 2017-23) league title in program history. The Eagles earned 12th (2007-11, 2017-23) conference championship under 17-year head coach Dave Malecek.  He has been selected the Mertz Mortorelli WIAC Coach of the Year on seven occasions (2007-11, 2015, 2017).  UWL earned the WIAC Coaching Staff of the Year Award for the sixth straight season Saturday.    

UWL won three individual titles on Saturday, including Tyler Shackle (141-pounds), Nolan Hertel (157) and Noah Leisgang (165). Shackle won his second career league crown at 141-pounds, going 3-0. After receiving a first round bye, he won by major decision (12-2) over Cooper Peterson of UW-Stevens Point in the quarterfinals. Shackle won by decision (5-3) over Andrew Kested of UW-Eau Claire in the semifinals and took first-place with a decision (6-4) over Dakarai Clay of UW-Whitewater. 

Hertel secured his third career WIAC title at 157-pounds on Saturday, finishing 4-0. He opened with a fall (2:10) over Joseph Spizzirri of UW-Oshkosh in the first round followed by another fall (2:35) over Alex Gundrum of UW-Stevens Point in the quarterfinals. Hertel won by decision (6-2) over UW-Platteville's Aiden Brosinski in the semifinals and took the conference title after a medical forfeit over teammate Cole Hansen

Leisgang won his first career conference championship on Saturday, going 3-0. He received a first round bye followed by a decision (3-2) over UW-Platteville's Matt Rogge in the quarterfinals. Leisgang won by sudden victory (3-1) over Ryan Vedner of UW-Whitewater in the semifinals. He won the league crown with a win by decision (3-2) over teammate Kaleb O'Reilly

Thirteen other wrestlers placed for UWL on Saturday, including Brandon Murphy (125), Tyler Goebel (149), Hansen (157), O'Reilly (165) and Michael Douglas (285) all finishing second. Murphy, Goebel and O'Reilly each went 2-1 on Saturday with Murphy earning one win by fall. Hansen finished 2-0 and Douglas went 3-1 with one win by fall. 

The Eagles' Sam Lorenz (141), Leo Draveling (174), Kalyn Jahn (184) and Ben Kawczynski (197) each placed third while Zach Weiler (133), Parker Kratochvill (149), and Wyatt Simon (174) were third. Lorenz, Draveling, Jahn and Kawczynski were all 3-1 in the tournament with Draveling earning a pair of wins by fall while Jahn had one. Weiler went 3-2 on the day with two victories by fall while Kratochvill was 2-2 with one win by fall and Simon finished 3-1 with one win by fall. 

Marcus Orlandoni (197) finished fifth on Saturday with Nolan Paar (184) placing sixth. Orlandoni went 2-2 while Paar was 1-2, recording his win by fall.

Cael Weinzweig went 1-2 at 133-pounds while Remington Bontreger (125) and Spencer Brewton (285) both finished 0-2.  

UWL returns to action Friday, February 24 at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Upper Midwest Regional at Concordia University Wisconsin.
