2023 Results
Prescott, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's cross country team earned its third consecutive Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship (Presented by Culver's) Saturday afternoon at Prescott (Wis.) High School.
The Eagles secured their 12th league title in school history with 29 team points. The 12 championships are second-most in WIAC history. UW-Oshkosh owns a conference-best 16 championships.
UW-Eau Claire placed second on Saturday with 46 points with UW-Whitewater and UW-Stout tied for third with 115. UW-Oshkosh placed fifth (120) followed by UW-Stevens Point (176), UW-Platteville (183) and UW-River Falls 207).
UWL had four runners in the top-seven and seven in the top-14.
Maddie Hannan led the Eagles with a second-place finish after a time of 21:50.3 on the 6,000-meter course.
Katelyn Chadwick finished third (21:53.8) with
Madelynn McIntyre sixth (22:24.6) and
Maddy Vantassel seventh (22:25.3).
Kylie Trousil was 11th (22:36.8) with
Gwen Hinz 13th (22:45.8) and
Sierra Rabe 14th (22:46.3). The Eagles'
Greta Koehler finished 20th (23:03.7) while
Mallory Reiser placed 34th (23:32.0),
Karlie Meyer 35th (23:34.4),
Becca Immer 41st (23:49.9) and
Lilly Higgins 54th (24:28.4).
Koehler was selected the WIAC Kwik Trip Newcomer of the Year at the conclusion of the championships while
Mackenzie Ginder was named to the All-WIAC Sportsmanship Team. Koehler is fourth runner in school history to earn the Newcomer of the Year Award, joining Hannan (2019),
Jenna Lovejoy (2021) and
Mackenzie Hill (2022).
The top-seven runners in the 6,000-meter race will receive All-WIAC first team recognition, while runners placing eight through 14 earn All-WIAC second team accolades. Individuals finishing 15 through 20 claim honorable mention laurels.
Carolyn Shult of UW-Eau Claire won the individual title on Saturday (21:25.6). A total of 87 runners completed the race.
Hannan and Vantassel each earned their fourth career All-WIAC honor on Saturday. Along with finishing second this season, Hannan won the individual title in 2022, placed seventh in 2021 and third in 2019. She was named the 2019 WIAC Newcomer of the Year. After finishing seventh in this year's championships, Vantassel also earned all-conference accolades in 2022 (sixth), 2021 (13th) and 2019 (11th).
Chadwick picked up her third career All-WIAC award on Saturday after finishing fourth in 2022 and 20th in 2021.
Twelve-year head coach
Derek Stanley has now led UWL to six WIAC Championships (2013-14, 2016, 2021-23) while finishing second on five occasions (2012, 2015, 2017-19). A total of 74 All-WIAC cross country honors have been earned under Stanley, including 32 first team selections and 21 second team choices.
UWL returns to action at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III North Regional on Saturday, November 11 at Whitetail Golf Course in Colfax, Wisconsin.
