UWL Wins Elmhurst Invitational; Seven Wrestlers Capture Titles

Elmhurst, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team captured the Al Hanke Invitational Saturday night at Elmhurst University (Ill.). The Eagles finished with 193.5 team points with Concordia College (Minn.) second with 110.0 and UW-Whitewater third with 103.5. A total of 18 teams competed. 

Seven individuals captured titles on Saturday, all going 5-0. Tyler Goebel won the 149-pound title with a sudden victory (8-6) over teammate Parker Kratochvill while Nolan Hertel won the 157-pound division with a forfeit victory over teammate Cole Hanson. Hertel earned a pair of wins by fall in the tournament. 

Noah Leisgang took the 165-pound crown with a tiebreaker win (3-1) over Darian Estevez of the University of Chicago (Ill.). The Eagles' Seth Brossard won the 174-pound title with three wins by fall. He took the crown with a forfeit win over teammate Leo Draveling

UWL's Kalyn Jahn won the 184-pound division with all five of his victories coming by fall. He defeated Giovanni Jackson of Harper College (Ill.) by fall (1:24) in the championship match. Ben Kawczynski took the 197-pound crown with a technical fall (19-3) over Peyton Smith of Concordia University Wisconsin. Michael Douglas captured the 285-pound title with a decision (5-3) over Cole Fibranz of Chicago (Ill.).

Four wrestlers finished second on Saturday, including Sam Lorenz (141-pounds), Kratochvill (149), Hansen (157) and Draveling (174). Lorenz went 4-1 with three wins by fall while Kratochvill finished 4-1 with two victories by fall. Hansen was 3-0 on the day with one win by fall and Draveling finished 4-0 with two victories by fall. 

The Eagles' Kaleb O'Reilly placed third at 165-pounds with a 4-1 record and three wins by fall. Elijah Lucio (165) and Sam Schwabe (184) both finished fourth on Saturday with Lucio going 2-1 and Schwabe 3-2 (two wins by fall).

UWL had five wrestlers finish fifth on Saturday, including Zach Weiler (133), Tyler Shackle (141), Joe Penchi (149), Wyatt Simon (174) and Marcus Orlandoni (197). Weiler (two falls), Shackle (three), Penchi (two) and Simon (two) all went 4-1 in the tournament while Orlandoni finished 3-1 (one fall).

Juan Garcia (141) and Kyle Plank (184) were both sixth with Garcia finishing 3-1 and Plank 2-2. Garcia earned one of his wins by fall. 

Other results on Saturday included Brandon Murphy going 1-2 and Remington Bontreger 2-2 with one win by fall at 125-pounds. Cael Weinzweig finished 2-2 at 133-pounds  Piersson Czaplinski (165) and Spencer Brewton (285) each finished 1-2 while Luke Clark (184) went 2-1 with both wins by fall.

Cooper Larson (157) and Nolan Paar (184) each won consolation first titles on Saturday with Larson going 5-1 and Paar 4-1. Both wrestlers earned two wins by fall. 

UWL returns to action Friday, January 20 hosting UW-Platteville at 7 p.m.
