Winona, Minn. -
The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse gymnastics team opened its 2023 season capturing the Winona State University (Minn.) Triangular Friday night in McCown Gymnasium. The Eagles finished with a team score of 188.425 while UW-Stout was second at 185.150 and host Winona State (Minn.) third with 180.300.

The Eagles scored 47.475 on the vault, 47.675 on the uneven parallel bars, 46.675 on the balance beam and 46.00 on the floor exercise.

"This meet shows how much potential this team has," said UWL head coach Kasey Crawford. "Starting at the beam for our first meet of the year showed some of our nerves, but I was really proud of how we rallied during that and through the rest of the meet."

UWL swept the four individual events on Friday, including a pair of titles from Rachel Chesley. She captured the vault (9.625) and floor exercise (9.425) while finishing second on the uneven parallel bars (9.725). Chesley was also second in the all-around (37.300).

Kerrie Legault took the uneven parallel bars title (9.825) Friday while Caelen Lansing won the balance beam (9.625). Lansing was also second (9.400) on the floor exercise.

The Eagles' Madi Vanderpool and Cate Sandvik both recorded a pair of top-six individual finishes. Vanderpool placed third on the vault (9.525) and fourth on the uneven parallel bars (9.575) while Sandvik finished sixth on the balance beam (9.450) and tied for sixth on the uneven parallel bars (9.275) with teammate Claudia Walter

Other top-six finishes included Marisa Zepeda tied for second on the balance beam (9.600) while Hannah Hautala tied for fourth on the vault (9.500). Alex Wood placed fourth (9.350) and Jessica Taylor fifth (9.275) on the floor exercise.

"We had a lot of new twisting vaults which was exciting and bars brought us home with outstanding sets," added Crawford. "To have one of our highest score openers in history, while still knowing that we can be even better, is exciting."

UWL returns to action Sunday, January 22 hosting Hamline University (Minn.) and Simpson College (Iowa) at 3 p.m. in the Eagles' home opener in Mitchell Hall.
