Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team earned a 25-14 victory at UW-Whitewater Thursday night in a dual featuring a pair of top-10 teams in Kachel Gymnasium in Williams Center. With the win, UWL improves to 11-2 overall and 3-0 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC). UW-Whitewater drops to 7-6 overall and 2-2 in the conference.
Starting at 197-pounds on Thursday, UWL'sÂ
Ben Kawczynski earned a technical fall (18-0, 6:04) over Evan Danowski to give the Eagles a 5-0 lead.
Michael Douglas followed with a win by decision (2-1 in overtime) at 285-pounds to make it 8-0.
Remington Bontreger's win by decision (5-4) over Jalen Dunson at 125-pounds extended UWL's lead to 11-0.Â
UW-Whitewater cut the lead to 11-10 with three consecutive wins. Dominik Mallinder won by major decision (13-4) over
Zach Weiler at 133-pounds followed by a pair of decisions for the Warhawks. Dakarai Clay won by decision (11-10) over
Tyler Shackle at 141 and Jake Burford defeated
Tyler Goebel by decision (6-4) at 149-pounds to make it 11-10.Â
UWL responded with three straight victories of its own.
Nolan Hertel won by technical fall (24-9, 6:42) over Hunter Rudzinski at 157-pounds to give the Eagles a 16-10 advantage.
Noah Leisgang followed with a decision (3-1) over Ryan Vender at 165-pounds and
Seth Brossard secured the dual win with a fall (4:15) over Tyler Haydon 174.Â
Jaritt Shinhoster won by major decision (9-1) over UWL's
Kalyn Jahn at 184-pounds in the final dual.Â
UWL returns to action Saturday, January 14 at the Elmhurst University (Ill.) Al Hanke Invitational at 9 a.m.
