Volleyball Drops Three Matches at Augsburg Invitational

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team went 0-3 at the Augsburg University (Minn.) Invitational Friday-Saturday in Si Melby Hall. The Eagles, 0-7 on the season, opened the invitational with a 3-0 (25-13, 25-18, 26-24) loss to 17th-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) on Friday. In Saturday's action, UWL fell 3-0 to Pacific Lutheran University (Wash.) (25-12, 25-18, 25-22) and 3-0 to host Augsburg University (25-23, 25-22, 25-19).

Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) scored the first three points in the opening set on Friday and raced out to a 9-2 lead. UWL cut the deficit to 11-6 on a Justine Bastyr kill, but could get no closer the rest of the set. The second set was tied six times, including 12-12, when the Gusties went on a 5-1 run to lead 17-13. The Eagles scored the next two points to cut it to 17-15, but the Gusties scored the next four points. 

UWL trailed, 18-15, in the third set when it went on a 5-0 run to take a 20-18 lead. Madison Weisensel and Anna Rossner each had a kill while Brianne Korducki recorded an ace. Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) later tied the set, 22-22, but a Gusties' hitting error and a kill from the Eagles' Megan Adams gave UWL a 24-22 lead. After a Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) timeout, the Gusties rallied to score the final four points to earn the win. 

Rossner led UWL with seven kills while Korducki finished with six. The Eagles hit .063 (36-28-126) for the match. Eleven different players had a kill. Adams finished with 15 assists with Jackie Oetterer registering 13. Summer Schwenn led three players in double figures in digs with 12. Korducki and Oetterer each recorded a double-double with Korducki finishing with 11 digs and Oetterer with 10. 

Marlee Turn led Gustavus Adolphus (Minn.) with 13 kills as the Gusties hit .248 (38-10-113). Kassie Tweet had 26 assists and Turn a team-high 13 digs.

Versus Pacific Lutheran (Wash.), the Lutes scored the first 11 points to take an early 11-0 lead. The Eagles would not get any closer than nine in the opening set as the Lutes won the first set 25-12. 

UWL took a 6-4 lead in set two behind kills from Korducki and Gabrialla Johnson. However, the Lutes would score nine of the next ten points to take a 15-7 lead. Back-to-back kills from Korducki and two errors by the Lutes cut the Eagles deficit to 16-11. But that would be as close as the Eagles would get as they dropped the second set 25-18.

The Lutes led 6-5 in the third set when the Eagles got two kills from Johnson and a block from Rossner to take an 8-6 lead. The score was then tied at 11 before PLU scored four straight to lead 15-11. A kill by Korducki and a service ace from Oetterer pulled the Eagles to with in 18-16 but the Lutes got a kill from Liv Evaro and three straight errors from the Eagles to take a 21-17 lead. The Eagles would not go away quietly though as they scored four of the next five points to trail 22-21. PLU would then score three of final four points to win the third set 25-22.

For the match, UWL finished hitting -.011 (25-26-88) with Korducki having a team-high nine kills and eight digs. Johnson added seven kills for the Eagles. Oetter led UWL with 14 assists. 

Pacific Lutheran hit .157 for the match with Elle Thomas and Haley Goto finishing with seven kills. Halle Hetzler had a team high 11 digs while Evaro led with 11 assists. 

In loss to Augsburg (Minn.), the first set was tied 4-4 before the Eagles went on a 8-2 run to take an early 12-6 lead. The Auggies responded with a 9-0 run to take a 15-12 lead. UWL would then take a 20-16 lead but Augsburg scored nine of the final 12 points to take the first set 25-23.

The second set saw Augsburg jump out to a 10-3 lead before UWL cut their deficit to 13-11 and eventually tie the score at 18. The Auggies then scored three straight and four of next five points to lead 22-19. The Eagles cut their deficit to 22-21 but the Auggies scored three of final four points to win the second set 25-22. 

In the final set, UWL took an early 4-1 lead before the score was tied at 6. With UWL leading 8-6, Augsburg scored six of next seven points to lead 12-9. The Eagle trimmed the deficit to 13-12 but the Auggies scored four unanswered (17-12) and UWL would not lead the rest of the way. 

As a team, UWL finished the game hitting .141 (43-25-128). Korducki led the Eagles in their final match of the weekend with 11 kills and 13 digs. Johnson and Madison Weisensel each added eight kills. Oetterer finished with 17 assists while Adams had 15. Also in double digit digs was Ella Luoma (12) and Schwenn (12). 

Korducki was one of eight players named to the all-tournament team.

Augsburg hit .215 for the match and was led by Kevin Boysen with 12 kills and Jade Fullerton with 10. Mikayla Coops led the way with 29 assists and Coops was tops in digs with 12.

UWL returns to action Wednesday, September 14 at UW-River Falls at 7 p.m. to open Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play.
