UWL Leads Conference Championships; Wins Pair of Titles

The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse men's track & field leads after the first day of competition Friday night at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships at Roger Harring Stadium at Veterans Memorial Stadium Sports Complex. 

The Eagles have 67.0 team points while UW-Eau Claire is second with 37.0 and UW-Stout third with 34.0. UW-Whitewater is fourth (31.0) followed by UW-Oshkosh (29.0), UW-Platteville (26.0), UW-Stevens Point (9.0) and UW-River Falls (1.0).

UWL is aiming for its 31st consecutive league title and 57th in school history.

UWL won a pair of individual titles on Friday as Sam Blaskowski captured the long jump (23-11 1/4) and Ethan Gregg the 10,000-meter run (30:01.62).  It marks the fourth straight time UWL has won the long jump title after Jacob Teunas (2018) and Samuel Sadowski (2019, 2021). 

Gregg is the first UWL runner to captured the 10,000-meter run since Paul Moran in 2010.

Along with Blaskowski winning the long jump title, the Eagles' Cameron Sorenson was second (23-9). Sorenson was also ninth (157-2) in the javelin throw. In other field event finishes, Logan Larson was second (15-5) and Joseph Jensen seventh (14-11) in the pole vault while Aiden Williams was fourth (181-0) in the hammer throw.

On the track, Isaac Wegner finished second (30:35.93) and Ethan Thompson eighth (31:23.65) in the 10,000-meter run. The Eagles had four of the top-seven finishers in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, including Adam Loenser third (9:12.97), Corey Fairchild fifth (9:22.60), Austin True sixth (9:23.14) and Elias Ritzke seventh (9:23.39).

After five events in the decathlon, Jensen is in 14th-place with 2,890 points. Athletes competed in the 100-meter dash, long jump, shot put, high jump and 400-meter dash on Friday. The decathlon concludes Saturday with the 110-metre hurdles, discus throw, pole vault, javelin throw and 1,500-meter run. 

In preliminary track action Friday, Blaskowski advanced to Saturday's finals in the 100 (10.29) and 200 (21.23) meter dash.  Carson Reilly advanced in the 110-meter hurdles (15.28) and Caden Pearce in the 400-meter dash (49.14). UWL's Michael Madoch (1:54.18) and Thomas Blumer (1:54.04) will run in Saturday's 800-meter run final.
