Box Score Decorah, Iowa - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a 9-5 non-conference win at Luther College (Iowa) Wednesday, improving to 21-14 on the season. The Norse drops to 19-17 on the year.
UWL took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as
Jordan Williams reached on a Luther (Iowa) error to start the game. After a strikeout, Williams stole second and scored on
Mac Born's single with the first run of the game. Born went to second on
Tommy Nelsen's groundout and
Jonathan Wizner followed with an RBI single to knock in Born to make it 2-0.
Luther (Iowa) came right back in the bottom of the first to tie the game. Charlie Rubendall scored on Gavin Scurr's sacrifice fly to cut it to 2-1 and Luke Plunkett came in on Aiden Michna's single to tie the game.
George Seaman had two hits and scored twice.
The Eagles scored twice in the top of the second.
George Seaman led-off with a double and scored on
Ben LaRonge's one-out single to give UWL a 3-2 lead. LaRonge went to second on a wild pitch. Williams and
Jack Olver followed with back-to-back singles to load the bases before Born delivered a sacrifice fly to score LaRonge.
UWL added to its lead with single tallies in the fourth and fifth inning and two more runs in the sixth to take a 8-2 lead.
Andrew Rajkovich scored on Williams' sacrifice fly in the top of the fourth for a 5-2 lead while Seaman's solo home run in the fifth gave the Eagles a 6-2 advantage. In the sixth, Williams walked and scored on Born's two-run home run.
The Norse cut the deficit to 8-4 with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth. Scurr came in on Noah Sebben's fielder's choice while Sebben later scored on Joe Jersak's double.
Wizner scored on a Rajkovich sacrifice fly in the seventh for UWL to make it 9-4. Luther (Iowa) finished the scoring in the eighth with Schurr coming in on Sebben's fielder's choice.
Jack Mizgalski (1-1) earned the win, pitching 3.0 innings, allowing five hits and two runs while striking out two.
Sawyer Phillips started, going 3.0 innings, allowing four hits, two runs (one earned) and one walk with two strikeouts. Mitchel Fassebender (two strikeouts),
Preston Piranio (one hit, one run, one walk, one strikeout) and
Tucker Bouche each pitched 1.0 inning.
Jack Mizgalski earned his first win of the year.
UWL finished with 15 hits with Wizner going 3-for-5 with one run and one RBI. Williams, Olver, Born, Seaman and LaRonge each had two hits. Williams, Born and Seaman each scored twice with Born finishing with a team-high four RBI.
Harrison Blum (4-2) took the loss for Luther (Iowa), going 2.0 innings, allowing six hits and four runs (two earned) with one strikeout.
The Norse had 10 hits in the game. Rubendall, Plunkett and Will Heithoff each had two hits.
UWL returns to action Friday, May 6 with a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader at UW-Eau Claire at 1 p.m.
