Box Score Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a 12-6 win at 20th-ranked UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon in the first game of a doubleheader at ZImmermann Field. The second game was tied, 14-14, after nine innings and suspended due to darkness. The game will resume Sunday, April 10 at 11 a.m. The teams will then play its originally scheduled doubleheader at the conclusion of the suspended game.
Jonathan Wizner hit a three-run home run in the ninth inning.
UWL scored five runs in the top of the first inning in the opener.
Connor Roesler doubled to start the game and went to third on
Tommy Nelsen's flyout to right field.
Zach Carney followed with an infield single to score Roesler with the first run of the game.
Jack Olver and
Mac Born hit back-to-back singles with Born knocking in Carney for a 2-0 lead.
Jack Kelly followed with a three-run home run for a 5-0 lead. Olver's solo home run in the top of the third made it 6-0 and Roesler scored on a Pointers' wild pitch in the fourth to give the Eagles a 7-0 lead.
UW-Stevens Point was held without a hit through the first three innings, but the Pointers scored three times on two hits in the bottom of the fourth. Kyle Finger's RBI groundout scored Payton Nelson with UW-Stevens Point's first run and Jakob Boos' single knocked in Quin Henwood and Lucas Luedtke to cut the lead to 7-3. Matt Baumann scored on an Eagles' throwing error to make it 7-4.
In the top of the seventh,
Andrew Rajkovich's three-run home run for UWL scored Kelly and
Jonathan Wizner to give the Eagles a 10-4 lead. Olver and Born each had sacrifice flies to score runs in the top of the eighth to make it 12-4.
The Pointers scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth on RBI singles from Aaron Simmons and Bradley Comer.
UWL finished with 16 hits in the opener as all nine starters recorded at least one. Roesler, Nelsen, Carney, Olver, Born, Rajkovich and
Ben LaRonge each had two hits while Roesler, Carney, Olver and Kelly each scored twice. Kelly and Rajkovich had three RBI on their home runs while Olver and Born finished with two RBI.
Alex Mach (3-0) picked up the victory, going 5.0 innings in relief. He allowed five hits, two runs (one earned) and two walks with five strikeouts.
Chris Seveska started, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing two hits, four runs (three earned) and six walks while striking out seven.
UW-Stevens Point totaled seven hits in the first game with Comer going 2-for-5. Caleb Krommenakker (4-1) took the loss, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing nine hits and seven runs with one strikeout.
For the second straight game, UWL scored five runs in the top of the first in the nightcap on Saturday. Olver's sacrifice fly scored Roesler with the first run of game. Born hit a three-run home run to make it 4-0 and Kelly followed with a solo home run.
UW-Stevens Point came back with four runs in the bottom of the first on one hit. Bauman scored on a wild pitch to make it 5-1 while Luedtke's three-run home run cut the lead to 5-4. The Pointers took an 8-4 lead with four runs in the bottom of the second, including three on Eagles' wild pitches.
Jack Kelly had five RBI in Saturday's doubleheader.
Born's second three-run home run of the game tied the game at 8-8 in the top of the third. UW-Stevens Point took a 9-8 lead in the third with an unearned run. Born scored on a passed ball in the top of the fifth to force a 9-9 tie, but the Pointers tallied four runs on five hits in the bottom of the inning to take a 13-9 lead. Nelson had a two-run single in the inning.
UWL cut it to 13-10 in the seventh as Olver doubled and scored on Born's RBI single. The Eagles took a 14-13 lead in the ninth. Olver singled with one out and went to third on Born's double. Kelly's RBI single scored Olver to make it 13-11. After a strikeout.
Jonathan Wizner hit a two-out three-run home run to give UWL a 14-13 lead. UW-Stevens Point tied the game in the bottom of the ninth on Aaron Simmons' solo home run.
The Eagles have 16 hits in the nightcap with Born going 5-for-5 with seven RBI, four runs and two home runs. Olver is 3-for-4 with three runs and an RBI while Kelly is 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI.
UW-Stevens Point has 10 hits in the game with Nelson going 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs. Simmons has scored four runs.
