La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team fell 15-13 to UW-Eau Claire Friday afternoon at Veterans Memorial Field Sports Complex. The Eagles drop to 3-4 on the season while the Blugolds improve to 11-1.
The all-time series is now tied, 1-1. UWL earned a 14-5 victory last season.
The teams combined for 11 goals in the first quarter with UWL taking a 6-5 lead.
Megan Feeney started the scoring with an assist from
Nicole Jernander with 13:45 remaining. Gracie Bowman tied the game with 13:16 left, but goals by
Hannah Gronowski and
Lauren Schwartz gave the Eagles a 3-1 lead. The Blugolds tied the game at 3-3.
Abigail Steigauf gave UWL a 4-3 advantage with an assist from Gronowski with 2:38 remaining in the first quarter.
Hanna Harshman's goal with 1:17 left gave UWL a 5-3 lead. After Samantha Burns scored on a free position shot to cut the lead to 5-4 with :46 remaining, Feeney's goal with :21 left off an assist from Steigauf made it 6-4. Burns' goal with :08 remaining cut the lead to 6-5.
UW-Eau Claire scored the first three goals of the second quarter to take an 8-6 lead.
Britta Nelson scored with an assist from Schwartz with 8:47 remaining to make it 8-7. The Blugolds took a 10-7 lead when Feeney (3:31 remaining) and Jernander (1:11) scored to cut it to 10-9 at halftime. Gronowski tallied the assist on Feeney's goal.
UWL took an 11-10 lead on goals from Jernander and Steigauf. Becky Goetsch tied the game for UW-Eau Claire with 6:38 left in the third quarter. Feeney gave the Eagles a 12-11 lead with 5:54 remaining, but Alexie Romanelli tied the game for the Blugolds with :01 left.
Burns (12:05 remaining), Romanelli (7:25) and Kylah Krause (5:26) gave UW-Eau Claire at 15-12 lead in the fourth quarter. Schwartz cut it to 15-13 with 3:45 left, but UWL could get no closer.

Feeney led UWL with four goals while Steigauf, Jernander and Schwartz each had two. Gronowski finished with two assists. The Eagles finished with 29 shots with Feeney registering a team-leading seven. Schwartz had five shots with Steigauf and Jernander each having two. Six different players recorded two ground balls. Abigale Furlano finished with 15 saves.
Burns led UW-Eau Claire with five goals while Romanelli had three. The Blugolds had 35 shots with Burns finishing with a team-leading nine. Romanelli and Alexandria Shea had five ground balls. Shea finished with six saves.
UWL returns to action Saturday, April 9 at Cornell College (Iowa) at 4 p.m.
