Nine Wrestlers Earn NWCA Scholar Honors

 Nine members of the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team earned National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Scholar Awards for the 2021-22 season. Senior Sawyer Sarbacker of Mineral Point (H.S.), juniors Luke Clark of St. Croix Falls (H.S.), Nick Fetzner of Crystal Lake, Ill. (Prairie Ridge) and Nolan Hertel of Marshfield (H.S.), sophomores Seth Brossard of Kenyon, Minn. (Kenyon-Wanamingo), Noah Leisgang of Ashwaubenon (H.S.) and Marcus Orlandoni of Fond du Lac (St. Mary's Springs) and freshmen Michael Douglas of Belmont (H.S.) and Cole Hansen of Mukwonago (H.S.) earned the academic honor. 

It is the third straight year Sarbacker has earned the honor.  Sarbacker, an exercise sport science major with a 3.25 grade point average, finished 12-7 overall this season. He went 11-7 at 133-pounds and 1-0 at 125. Sarbacker placed fifth at the 2022 National Collegiate Athletic  Association (NCAA) Division III Upper Midwest Regional.  Logo

An elementary education major with a 3.60 grade point average, Clark went 12-11 at 174-pounds. He placed sixth at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships.

Fetzner has compiled a 3.42 cumulative grade point average. He was 14-10 at 165-pounds this year with a fifth-place finish at the league championships.

Majoring in recreational management with a 3.08 grade point average, Hertel went 26-5 in 2021-22, including 23-5 at 157-pounds and 3-0 at 165.  He earned his first career NCAA Division III All-America honor with a fifth-place finish at the championships at 157-pounds. Hertel captured the WIAC title and NCAA III Upper Midwest Regional crown.

Brossard, an education major with a 3.28 grade point average, finished 24-4 at 165.  He also picked up his first career All-America accolade after finishing seventh at the 2022 NCAA III Championships. Brossard captured the WIAC and NCAA III Upper Midwest Regional title.

Leisgang, also an education major while compiling a 3.34 grade point average, went 21-7 at 165.

A biochemistry major and 3.84 grade point average, Orlandoni compiled an overall record of 22-13 this season, going 6-3 at 184-pounds, 15-10 at 197 and 1-0 at 285. He placed third at the WIAC Championships at 197-pounds and went 1-2 at the NCAA III Upper Midwest Regional.

Majoring in business major, Douglas has a 3.30 grade point average. He went 13-10 at 285-pounds, finishing 1-2 at the league championships.

Hansen is majoring in computer science and mathematics with a 3.56 grade point average. He finished 12-4 in 2021-22, finishing 1-0 at 149-pounds and 11-4 at 157.

A total of 325 individuals representing 87 teams were honored.
