UWL Completes Four-Game Series Sweep of UW-Stout

Mac Born had six hits and six RBI in Monday's doubleheader.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep at UW-Stout Monday afternoon at Nelson Field, winning the opener, 14-3, and the nightcap, 10-0 in seven innings.  The Eagles improve to 16-13 overall and 11-9 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Blue Devils drop to 15-15 overall and 10-10 in the conference. 

UWL swept Sunday's doubleheader, winning 11-3 and 5-4. 

UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first in the opener as Zach Carney walked to lead-off the game and scored on Mac Born's single. The Eagles added to their lead in the top of the third. Tommy Nelsen doubled, went to the third on a wild pitch and scored after Born reached on an Blue Devils' error to make it 2-0.

UW-Stout tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on Charlie Szykowny's two-run single knocking in Levi Wilson and Joel Thimsen. 

The Eagles regained the lead in the top of the fifth. Carney singled to start the inning, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Nelsen's RBI double for a 3-2 lead. Riley Boushack's single in the bottom of the sixth scored Szykowny to tie the game. 

UWL scored three times in the top of the seventh. Born's solo home run gave the Eagles a 4-3 lead. After Jack Olver walked, Tim Urlaub delivered an RBI double to score Olver for a two-run lead. Urlaub later scored on a Jordan Williams' single. The Eagles added five runs in the eighth and three in the ninth. Urlaub had a two-run single and Connor Roesler a three-run home run in the eighth. In the ninth, Born's RBI single scored George Seaman and Olver finished the scoring with a two-run double knocking in Carney and Nelsen. 

UWL tied a season-high with 19 hits in the opener as all nine starters registered a hit. Born went 3-for-6 with three RBI and two runs, Olver 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs and Williams 3-for-5 with an RBI. Nelsen, Urlaub, Roesler and Andrew Rajkovich each had two hits. Carney scored four times while Nelsen and Urlaub each had two runs. Urlaub and Roesler each had three RBI. 

Brady Schmitt (2-2) picked up the win, going 6.0 innings, allowing five hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks while striking out six. 

Five different players had a hit for UW-Stout in the opener. Ethan Kjellberg (4-3) suffered the loss, pitching 0.1 of an inning, allowing four hits, three runs and one walk. Cody Urban started for the Blue Devils, going 6.0 innings, allowing nine hits, three runs (two earned) and two walks with four strikeouts. 

In the nightcap, Jacob Bryant (3-2) earned the complete-game shutout. He went 7.0 innings, allowing six hits while striking out nine. 

UWL took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second, including back-to-back home runs from Urlaub and Roesler to start the inning. Williams then singled and later scored on Carney's fielder's choice. The Eagles added three runs in the third to make it 6-0 on Born's solo home run and Seaman's two-run double knocking in Olver and Roessler. 

Born hit a two-run home run in the top of the fourth to give UWL an 8-0 lead and Olver connected on a two-run home run in the seventh to finish the scoring. 

The Eagles finished with 12 hits as Born went 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBI and two home runs. Olver finished 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI while Seaman was 2-for-4 with two RBI. Roessler scored twice. 

Szykowny (1-1) took the loss for UW-Stout, pitching 2.2 innings, allowing seven hits and six runs while striking out four. The Blue Devils had six hits with Thimsen going 2-for-3 and Paul Weise 2-for-2.

UWL returns to action Wednesday, April 27 at Gustavus Adolphus College (Minn.) at 2:30 p.m.
