UWL Sweeps UW-Stout; Rallies in Ninth to Win Nightcap

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Menomonie, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader sweep over UW-Stout Sunday afternoon at Wakanda Park, winning the opener, 11-3, and the nightcap, 5-4.  The Eagles improve to 14-13 overall and 9-9 in the WIAC while the Blue Devils drop to 15-13 overall and 10-8 in the conference.

In the opener, UWL took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Tim Urlaub doubled to start the inning and went to third on Colton Schraepfer's single. After a pair of strikeouts, Mac Born delivered a two-run single to make it 2-0. The Eagles added to their lead in the top of the sixth. Jonathan Wizner singled with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He scored on Connor Roesler's two-out single for a 3-0 lead.

UW-Stout got on the scoreboard with a run in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 3-1 on Charlie Szykowny's solo home run. 

UWL scored twice in the top of the seventh. Urlaub's home run made it 4-1 and Schraepfer later scored on Born's single. The Eagles added six runs in the top of the eighth. Urlaub, Schraepfer and Zach Carney each had RBI singles while Born had a two-run home run. 

Szykowny had a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth for the Blue Devils. 

Chris Seveska (3-1) picked up the win, going 7.2 innings, allowing four hits, three runs and four walks while striking out 11. Sawyer Phillips went 1.1 innings with two strikeouts. UWL had 16 hits in the opener with Born, Urlaub and Tommy Nelsen each finishing with three. Born had five RBI. Urlaub and Schraepfer each scored three times with Urlaub finishing with two RBI and Schraepfer one. 

Jace Baumann (1-4) suffered the loss for UW-Stout, pitching 6.0 innings, allowing six hits, three runs and two walks with six strikeouts. The Blue Devils was held to four hits with Szykowny going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. 

UWL took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in the opener. Carney and Nelsen started the game with back-to-back doubles to make it 1-0. Nelsen later scored on Urlaub's RBI double for a 2-0 lead. 

UW-Stout tied the game at 2-2 with single runs in the first and second inning. Levi Wilson scored an unearned run in the first while Riley Boushack's solo home run in the second tied the game. 

The Eagles regained the lead in the top of the third with Nelsen scoring on a passed ball to make it 3-2. The Blue Devils tied the game in the bottom of the fifth on Colin Hageman's solo home run and took a 4-3 lead in the eighth on Drew Ries' RBI groundout.   

UWL rallied in the ninth with a pair of solo home runs. Roesler led-off with a home run to tie the game and George Seaman's out-one home run gave the Eagles a 5-4 lead. UW-Stout was retired in order in the bottom of the ninth. 

Caleb Matl (2-3) earned the victory, pitching 1.2 innings in relief while striking out two. Alex Mach started for the Eagles, going 7.1 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs (three earned) and two walks with four strikeouts. UWL had 10 hits as Carney, Nelsen and Urlaub each finishing with two. Carney scored a pair of runs. 

Quintin Gonzalez (1-1) took the loss for UW-Stout. He went 3.0 innings in relief, allowing three hits and two runs with three strikeouts. Drew Buss started, going 6.0 innings, allowing seven hits, three runs (two earned) and three walks with five strikeouts. The Blue Devils had seven hits as Levi Wilson went 3-for-4 with two runs. 

The teams will play another doubleheader Monday, April 25 starting at 10 a.m. at UW-Stout's Nelson Field.
