Box Score Montgomery, Ill. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team fell 12-11 at Aurora University (Ill.) Tuesday afternoon at Spartan Athletic Park. The Eagles drop to 6-5 on the season while the Spartans improve to 10-5.
UWL would score first with a goal by
Megan Feeney at 12:50 in the first quarter. The teams would alternate goals until Aurora (Ill.) took their first lead of the game, 4-3 at the :23 second mark in the first quarter. Feeney would score another goal for the Eagles in the first quarter, while
Hannah Gronowski would add a goal and an assist of her own. Monique Gibson had two goals and an assist for the Spartans in the first quarter.
Feeney scored her third goal of the game to even the score at 4-4 at 13:36 in the second quarter, but Gibson responded with her third goal to give Aurora (Ill.) the lead for good at 11:49 in the second. Margaret Flannagan and Danielle Cobbett each scored their second goals of the game at 6:10 and 4:34 to put the Spartans up 7-4. Feeney and Gronowski closed the deficit to just one goal with 2:59 left in the half by scoring two goals in 42 seconds. However, Aurora (Ill.) scored two more goals with under a minute in the period to take a 9-6 lead into halftime.
Hanna Harshman scored the first goal of the second half at 6:53 in the third and Mackenzie Crouse brought the Eagles within one again with a man-up goal at 5:20. Cobbett responded :08 later for the Spartans, and Bailey Simpson brought the Spartan lead back to three goals at 4:59 on a Gibson-assisted goal.
Aurora (Ill.) took the largest lead of the game, 12-8, at the 12:48 mark of the fourth quarter on Gibson's fourth goal of the game.
Nicole Jernander scored a goal at 6:41 and Feeney scored two more in the fourth, including one at bring the game to 11-12 with 2:05 left in the game, but UWL's rally fell short.
Feeney led all players with six goals, while Gronowski recorded two goals and an assist for the Eagles.
Hanna Harshman also had one goal and one assist. UWL finished with 11 goals on 27 shots, and 37 ground balls. Abigale Furlano finished with 19 saves.
Cobbett and Gibson each led the Spartans with four goals, Flannagan had three, and Simpson added one. Gibson had two assists and Flannagan had one. Aurora (Ill.) finished with 12 goals on 38 shots, and 34 ground balls. Alexis Crowley ended with nine saves.
UWL returns to action on Friday, April 22 at UW-River Falls at 4 p.m.
