UWL Defeats Augsburg, Surpasses School Record For Goals

Minneapolis, Minn. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse lacrosse team defeated Augsburg University (Minn.), 25-8, Friday evening at Edor Nelson Field. The win moves the Eagles to 6-4 on the year while the Auggies drop to 0-12 overall. 

After scoring a single-game school record 23 goals Tuesday night against Illinois Institute of Technology, UWL once again set the school record with 25 goals. 

UWL opened the scoring in the second minute of the game as Lauren Schwartz scored an unassisted goal with 13:53 left in the period. The Eagles would score the first three goals of the game and take a 6-2 lead at the end of the first period. Schwartz would add her second goal while Megan Feeney, Hannah Gronowski, Nicole Jernander and Hanna Harshman each had a goal in the opening frame. Harshman and Abigail Steigauf each had an assist on the first period goals for the Eagles.

Britta Nelson scored three goals and assisted twice for Eagles.

Two Feeney goals and another by Gronowski extended UWL's lead to 9-2 with 11:52 in the second period. Augsburg would get a goal from Mackenzie Galazen before UWL scored two more goals to take a 11-3 lead. This time it was an unassisted goal by Britta Nelson and a Jernander assisted goal by Grace Willmott. UWL and Augsburg would then trade goals back and forth with UWL scoring the final goal to lead 14-5 after two periods. Scoring for the Eagles in the final 7:26 of the period was Steigauf, Feeney and Willmott. 

Feeney scored two more goals in the third period while Steigauff, Gronowski and Harshman each had one as UWL led 19-7 going into the fourth quarter. The fourth quarter saw the Eagles score six more while their defense only allowed one. Nelson (2), Jernander (2), Madison Buttwiler, and Wilmott all scored for the Eagles in the final period. 

As a team, the Eagles finished with 40 shots, including 36 on goal. Feeney once again led the Eagle offense as she finished with seven shots and six goals scored. Also scoring multiple goals for UWL was Nelson, Gronowski, Jernander and Willmott with three each while Steigauf, Harshman, and Schwartz scored twice. Jernander, Nelson and Gronowski each added two assists while Steigauf, Harshman, Schwartz, Buttweiler and MacKenzie Crouse each had one assist. Savannah Allen and Schwartz both finished with a team-high four ground balls. 

Emily Hageman played all 60 minutes in goal for the Eagles and made four saves. 

Augsburg finished with 16 shots including 12 on goal. Glazen finished with three goals while Maylynn Prokopec and Malia Neumann each had two goals. Emma Maythaler finished with 11 saves for Augsburg. 

UWL will return to action on Tuesday, April 19 at Aurora University (Ill.). Game time is to be determined.
