UWL Drops Doubleheader to Nationally Ranked UW-Whitewater

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team dropped a doubleheader to nationally-ranked UW-Whitewater Friday afternoon at Copeland Park. The Eagles dropped game one, 9-5 and game two, 7-3.

UWL is now 12-11 overall and 7-7 in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) action while UW-Whitewater improves to 17-6 on the year and 9-3 in WIAC play. The Warhawks are ranked 11th nationally on this week's D3baseball.com/National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBA) Top-25 Poll.

In game one, the Warhawks jumped out to an 8-1 lead after four innings. UW-Whitewater would score a run in the second on a sacrifice fly and a run in the third inning on a throwing error. The Warhawks then scored six runs in the top of the fourth inning. The Warhawks had two home runs in the inning including a three-run home run by Zach Campbell. The Eagles would get on the board in the bottom half of the fourth inning as Jack Olver singled, advanced to third on a double by Mac Born and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jonathan Wizner.

In the sixth inning, Zach Carney singled and advanced to third on a single by Olver. Wizner would then drive them both in with his second home run of the season to cut the Eagles' deficit to 8-4. The score remained 8-4 until the ninth inning when UW-Whitewater scored a run in the top half on a sacrifice fly. The Eagles would get a run in the bottom half of the ninth inning but that would be all the scoring for the Eagles. Tim Urlaub was hit-by-pitch and scored on a double by Tommy Nelsen. 

The Eagles finished game one with 10 hits including two each for Carney, Olver and Born. Wizner finished with four runs batted in and a run scored. Chris Seveska (2-1) suffered the loss on the mound for the Eagles as he allowed eight runs (two earned) on eight hits and four walks with six strikeouts in 4.0 innings of work. Sawyer Phillips pitched the final 5.0 innings for the Eagles striking out four while giving up five hits and one run.

Westin Muir (5-1) picked up the win on the mound for the Warhawks as he allowed four runs on nine hits, one walk and seven strikeouts in 7.1 innings of work. Matt Scolan led the Warhawks offensively by going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI. Sam Vomhof, Nick Paget and Matt Korman all added two hits for the Warhawks.

In game two, the Eagles struck first as they scored two runs on two hits in the second inning. Born led off the inning with a walk and then was driven in for the first run of the game on a double by Urlaub. Andrew Rajkovich then drove in Urlaub with a double of his own. UW-Whitewater would respond in the top of the third by scoring four runs including Campbell's second three-run home run of the day. UWL would get a run back in the bottom half of the inning when Nelsen led off with a double and eventually scored on a single by Born.

UW-Whitewater added a run in the fourth inning on a RBI single by Vomhof and two more runs in the fifth inning to extend its lead to 7-3. Jacob DeMeyer hit a home run in the fifth inning. UWL would threaten in the sixth inning as they had its first two batters reach base but that would be as far as they would get. Then in UWL's final at-bat, with one out, Jack Moran walked and advanced to third on a single by Nels3n. However, the Warhawks would get Carney to hit into a double play to end the game. 

Nelsen was 3-for-5 with a run scored for the Eagles while Born was 1-for-2 with two walks, a run scored and an RBI. Urlaub finished 1-for-3 with a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Jacob Bryant (2-2) suffered the loss for the Eagles as he gave up five runs on  seven hits while striking six in 4.0 innings. Caleb Matl pitched the final 5.0 innings for UWL giving up two runs on four hits, two walks and six strikeouts. 

Vomhof led the way for the Warhawks going 3-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI while DeMeyer, Korman and Bennett Frazer each had two hits. Kade Lancour (5-0) earned the win for the Warhawks on the mound giving up three runs on seven hits, three walks and 10 strikeouts in 7.0 innings. 

These two teams will be back on the field tomorrow at Copeland Park for another doubleheader with game one scheduled for 12 p.m.
