UWL Drops Twinbill to UW-Whitewater

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team dropped its Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader to UW-Whitewater Saturday at Copeland Park. The Warhawks, ranked 11th on D3baseball.com, took the opener, 12-5, and the nightcap, 9-6. UWL falls to 12-13 overall and 7-9 in the WIAC while UW-Whitewater improves to 19-6 overall and 11-3 in the conference. 

UW-Whitewater took a 3-0 lead in the top of the second in the opener. Zach Campbell led-off with a home run for the first run of the game. Matt Scolan and Ryan Norton singled and Bennett Frazer followed with a double to score Scolan. Norton came in on Sam Paden's sacrifice fly. The Warhawks added to their lead in the top of the third with Jacob DeMeyer scoring on a Scolan RBI groundout. 

UWL tied the game in the bottom of the third. George Seaman started the inning with a home run to get the Eagles on the board. Jack Moran walked and scored on Tommy Nelsen's double to cut the lead to 4-2. Mac Born later hit a two-out two-run home run to score Nelsen and tie the game.

UW-Whitewater took a 7-4 lead with three runs in the fifth. Matt Korman's two-run double scored Nick Paget and DeMeyer and Scolan's RBI groundout knocked in Korman for a 7-4 advantage. Campbell scored on Frazer's single in the top of the seventh to make it 8-4 and the Warhawks scored four times in the eighth highlighted by Scolan's two-run double. 

Zach Carney's solo home run in the eighth cut the lead to 12-5. 

Tucker Bouche (0-1) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 4.0 innings, allowing four hits, four runs and three walks. Brady Schmitt started, going 2.1 innings, allowing seven hits, four runs and one walk with three strikeouts. The Eagles totaled seven hits with Carney finishing 2-for-3. Born had two RBI.

Cam Anfang (2-0) picked up the victory for UW-Whitewater in the opener Saturday. He pitched 8.0 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs and one walk while striking out 10. The Warhawks had 15 hits in the game as Campbell went 4-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. Frazer finished 3-for-4 with three RBI. Korman and Scolan each had two hits with Korman finishing with two runs and two RBI while Scolan scored twice with four RBI. 

UW-Whitewater scored five times in the top of the first in the nightcap, highlighted by a three-run double from Scolan. The Warhawks added a run in the top of the third on DeMeyer's RBI double. UWL cut the deficit to 6-3 with three runs in the bottom of the third. Ty Hamilton walked with one out and went to second on Colton Schraepfer's single. Nelsen's single loaded the bases and Hamilton came in on Carney's RBI groundout to make it 6-1. Mac Born followed with a two-run single to score Schraepfer and Nelsen. 

The Warhawks tallied three runs in the top of the fourth on Nick Paget's two-run double and DeMeyer's run-scoring single. The Eagles scored three runs of their own in the bottom of the seventh. Hamilton, Schraepfer and Nelsen singled to load the bases with no out. Carney's fielder's choice scored Hamilton and Schraepfer came in on the play after a UW-Whitewater throwing error to cut the lead to 9-5. Carney advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Born's single to make it 9-6.

Hayden Fox (2-1) earned the win for UW-Whitewater, pitching 6.1 innings, allowing seven hits, six runs and two walks while striking out four. Cade Berendt picked up his first save of the season. He pitched 2.2 innings, allowing one hit with three strikeouts. All nine starters had a hit for the Warhawks, who finished with 13 overall. DeMeyer was 3-for-4 with three RBI. . 

Alex Redman (2-3) took the loss, going 3.2 innings, allowing 10 hits, nine runs (eight earned) and one walk while striking out one. Alex Mach pitched 5.1 innings in relief. He allowed three hits and three walks with seven strikeout. UWL had eights in the second game with Nelsen, Born and Schraepfer each finishing with two. Born had three RBI while Schraepfer and Hamilton each scored twice. 

UWL returns to action Thursday, April 21 at St. Olaf College (Minn.) at 2:30 p.m.
