La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team fell 66-59 to UW-River Falls Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles drop to 12-10 overall and 4-7 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Falcons improve to 10-11 overall and 3-8 in the conference.
Emma Gamoke went six-of-10 from the field.
The game was tied, 6-6, when UW-River Falls' hit back-to-back three-pointers by Haley DeSouza and Cassie Heinrichs to take a 12-6 lead.
Kat Fitzgerald's layup cut it to 12-8, but Heinrichs hit another three-pointer with :35 left to give the Falcons a 15-8 lead after the opening quarter.
Trailing, 23-17, UWL went on a 7-0 run to take a 24-23 lead with 3:04 remaining on an
Alana Gilles' jumper. UW-River Falls took a 31-30 halftime lead.
UW-River Falls opened the third quarter with an 11-1 run to take a 42-31 lead with 5:34 left in the third quarter on an Olivia Miron layup. UWL cut the deficit to 45-37 with 2:55 remaining after
Paige Schumann's three-pointer, but UW-River Falls used an 11-3 run to end the quarter for a 56-40 lead.
Macy Nilsen's jumper with 5:29 left gave UW-River Falls a 63-49 lead. UWL went on a 7-1 run to cut the lead to 64-56 with 1:19 remaining on
Emma Gamoke's three-point basket. The Eagles could get no closer than the final margin of seven.
UWL shot 41.8% from the field, including 22.7% (five-of-22) from three-point range, and 66.7% (eight-of-12) at the free throw line. Schumann, Gamoke and Gilles led the Eagles with 13 points each. Schumann finished with a team-high five steals while Gilles had a team-high seven rebounds.
Paige Schumann had 13 points and five steals.
UW-River Falls shot 45.8% from the field, including 56.0% (14-of-25) from three-point range, and 42.1% (eight-of-19) at the line. UW-River Falls went seven-of-12 from three-point range in the first half and seven-of-13 in the second half. Heinrichs led the Falcons with 12 points while Nilsen finished with 11. Heinrichs had a team-high four steals. DeSouza added nine points. Miron recorded a team-high seven rebounds.
UWL returns to action Saturday, February 12 hosting UW-Oshkosh at 3 p.m. on Senior Day.
