Women's Track & Field Leads After First Day of WIAC Championships

Platteville, Wis. – The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's track and field team is in first-place after the first day of action at the 2022 Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Indoor Championship (presented by Culver's) hosted by UW-Platteville in Williams Fieldhouse. 

The Eagles, seeking their 28th league title in school history, have 126 team points after Friday's action. UW-Eau Claire is second with 45 and UW-Oshkosh third with 43. UW-Stout is fourth (30) followed by UW-Platteville (19), UW-Stevens Point (18), UW-Whitewater (17) and UW-River Falls (14).

UWL's Olivia Owens won the high jump (5-6) Friday while Macie Todd was second (5-6) and Alia Vanderhoef sixth (5-2 1/4). Owens is the first UWL student-athlete to win the high jump since Kayla Ashland won two straight titles (2013-14). Skye Digman won the WIAC shot put title (48-8 1/4) Friday while Sarah Hulstedt finished eighth (41-6). It is Digman's second straight shot put championship. 

In other finishes in the field events, Hannah Zenkovich finished second in the long jump (18-7 3/4) while Jessica Stelzner was fifth (18-3 3/4) and Samantha Barrett seventh (17-9 3/4). UWL's Ashley O'Connell and Abby Meidl tied for second (11-8 1/2) in the pole vault. 

On the track, Maddie Hannan was second (5:06.17) and Emma Malooly third (5:07.09) in the mile run.  In the 400-meter dash, the Eagles had seven of the top-eight finishers including Katie Banie (59.18) second, Amber Johnson (59.18) third, Izi Knoernschid (59.81) fourth, Mara Schroeder (59.88) fifth, Lilly Halvorson (1:00.01) sixth, Melanie Kunze (100.36) seventh and Anna Ayd (1:00.65) eighth.

Katelyn Chadwick was the Eagles' top finisher in the 5,000-meter run, placing third (18:16.11). Rachel Jeffers was fourth (18:21.44), Maddy Vantassel fifth (18:25.34), Julia Anderson sixth (18:25.52) and Madelynn McIntyre eighth (18:35.12).

UWL's Kylie Trousil, Ellie Jillson, Greta Koehler and Kimberly Carviou finished fourth (12:41.47) in the distance medley relay. 

In preliminary track action, UWL's Emma Lawrence (8.77), Hannah Zenkovich (8.85), Brooke McDowell (9.09) and Hannah Holm (9.34) advanced to Saturday's 60-meter hurdles final. Haley Durst (7.77), Emily Dawidowich (7.79) and Jessica Stelzner (7.91) advanced in the 60-meter dash.
