Brown Deer, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's swimming & diving team captured its 10th straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship (presented by Culver's) Saturday night at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center. It is UWL's league-record 21st title in school history.
UWL finished with 881 team points Saturday, surpassing UW-Eau Claire's second place total of 825. UW-Stevens Point was third (767), UW-Whitewater fourth (308) and UW-Oshkosh fifth (267).
Autumn Seebach
In Saturday's action, UWL won a pair of individual titles as
Autumn Seebach took the 200 backstroke (2:03.86) and
Maddy Albert-Nelson the 200 butterfly (2:08.79). Seebach is the first UWL swimmer to win the 200 backstroke since
Lilly Larsen won her second straight in 2019. Albert-Nelson is the first swimmer from UWL to capture the 200 butterfly since Andrea Kolitsch in 2013.
Maddy Albert-Nelson
Albert-Nelson captured the 100 butterfly on Friday night. She becomes the first swimmer in the WIAC to win the 100 and 200 butterfly at the same meet since Jessica Lenhart of UW-Whitewater in 2018.
UWL won the 400 freestyle relay title Saturday night (3:32.94) with
Sydney Guenther,
Alexis Hoeben,
Reilly Eiynck and
Aubrey Lonergan. It is the Eagles' first championship in the 400 freestyle since
Victoria Campbell,
Maddie Volk, Katelyn De Starkey and Anna Landgraf won in 2017.
The Eagles had four of the top-five finishers in the 200 backstroke Saturday. Along with Seebach winning the event,
Jordy Hahlen was second (2:04.54), Sophie Benson fourth (2:09.03) and
Kylee Sommer fifth (2:09.13).
Lauren Steien placed second (2:26.65) in the 200 breaststroke with
Abi Schauske fourth (2:29.63) and
Molly Banks 13th (2:37.47). Schauske was also third (2:12.83) in the 200 butterfly while
Sarina Le was sixth (2:15.59) and
Brooke Presny ninth (2:16.93).
Hoeben finished third (53.46) in the 100 freestyle while Lonergan finished fifth (53.50), Eiynck seventh (54.34) and Guenther ninth (54.90).
In the 1,650 freestyle,
Amelia Olson was third (17:58.20),
Claire Vandenhouten seventh (18:31.87), Ellie Bie eighth (18:35.07) and Sophie Benson 12th (20:20.33).
Laci Gottschalk placed third (382.20 points) in the three-meter diving while
Erika Hysalliu finished ninth (339.50) and
Lauren Feder 11th (307.25).
Steien was named the WIAC Newcomer of the Year at the conclusion of the championships while
Steve Mohs was selected the WIAC Coach of the Year. It is the second (2019-20) WIAC Coach of the Year honor for Mohs. Lonergan was one of five student-athletes named to the WIAC All-Sportsmanship Team.
Amanda Wciorka was voted the WIAC Judy Kruckman Scholar-Athlete.
UWL returns to action Friday, February 25 at the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division III Central Diving Regional in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The NCAA III Championships are scheduled for Wednesday, March 16 through Saturday, March 19 in Indianapolis, Indiana.
