Platteville, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team earned a 24-18 win at UW-Platteville Tuesday night in Williams Fieldhouse. The Eagles, third in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Dual Rankings, improve to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pioneers drop to 2-5 overall and 0-4 in the conference.
UW-Platteville took a 3-0 lead at 125-pounds as Isaac Wiegel won by decision (3-1) over UWL's
Brandon Murphy. The Eagles tied the dual at 3-3 on
Sawyer Sarbacker's decision (3-0) over Zach Thompson at 133. Sarbacker is ranked 11th and Thompson 15th in the NWCA.
The Pioneers took a 12-3 lead with wins at 141 and 149. Zach Licht won by fall over the Eagles'
Tyler Shackle at 141-pounds while Brock Parker won by decision (6-3) over
Sam Lorenz at 149.
Kalyn Jahn earned the win at 184.
Nolan Hertel and
Seth Brossard earned back-to-back wins by fall to give UWL a 15-12 advantage. Ranked fourth at 157, Herton defeated Owen Norman (1:47) while Brossard, ranked fifth in the NWCA, defeated Alexander Strueder (6:14) at 165.
UWL's
Isaac Gust and
Kalyn Jahn extended the lead to 21-12 with victories at 174 and 184. Gust won by decision (5-1) over Nick Dado at 174-pounds while Jahn, ranked 10th, defeated Tyler Hannah (5-0) at 184.
UW-Platteville cut the lead to 21-18 with Max Schmitz won by fall (3:25) over
Marcus Orlandoni at 197-pounds. UWL's
Ben Kawczynski, ranked sixth at 285, secured the dual victory for the Eagles with a win by decision (5-0) over Brett Schoenherr.
UWL won one of three exhibition matches on Tuesday with
Michael Douglas winning by fall (1:03) over Luke Leranth at 285. UW-Platteville's Petre Driscoll won by fall (1:24) over
Nick Fetzner at 165 while Ryan Hannah earned a win by decision (8-6) over
Cole Hansen at 157.
UWL returns to action Friday, February 4 at UW-Stevens Point at 7 p.m.
