UWL Earns Pair of Wins over Ranked Opponents; Defeats North Central and Coe

La Crosse, Wis. -
The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team, ranked third on the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Division III Poll, earned a pair of wins over nationally-ranked teams Saturday in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles, now 4-0 on the season, earned a 25-20 victory over fourth-ranked North Central College (Ill.) and a 28-11 victory over eighth-ranked Coe College (Iowa). 

North Central (Ill) took the first four matches, racing out to a 20-0 lead. The Cardinals took a 6-0 lead at 125-pounds with 13th-ranked Julian Valtierrez winning by fall (6:18) over eighth-ranked Brandon Murphy. North Central (Ill.) made it 11-0 with top-ranked Robbin Precin winnning by technical fall (16-0, 5:30) over UWL's Cael Weinzweig at 133.

Seth Brossard earned a win by fall and one by technical fall.


Brad Rosen followed with a technical fall (17-2, 5:17) over Sam Lorenz at 141-pounds to give the Cardinals a 16-0 lead. Seventh-ranked Javen Estrada earned the victory over Tyler Goebel at 149-pounds by major decision (10-2) at 149 to make it 20-0. 

UWL then rattled off six straight victories. Third-ranked Nolan Hertel won by decision (3-2) over fifth-ranked Alex Villar at 157-pounds followed by Kaleb O'Reilly earning the decision (6-5) over 15th-ranked Cole Cervantes at 165. Seth Brossard and Kayln Jahn followed with back-to-back falls to cut the lead to 20-18. Brossard, ranked third at 174-pounds, defeated Joey Jens (2:46) and 13th-ranked Jahn beat Payton Geigner at 184 (1:51). 

Top-ranked Ben Kawczynski gave UWL a 22-20 lead at 197-pounds with a major decision (10-0) over Elijah Brockie. The Eagles secured the dual as Michael Douglas won by sudden victory (2-1) over seventh-ranked Robby Bates at 285. 

Versus Coe (Iowa), the Kohawks took a 8-0 lead after two matches. Jaiden Moore won by decision (4-2) over Murphy 125 followed by 15th-ranked Alex Friddle winning by technical fall (17-1, 5:13) at 133. 

UWL cut the lead to 8-6 at 141-pounds with Lorenz winning by fall (5:21) over Bryce Parks. The Eagles took a 9-8 lead as Goebel won by decision (6-5) over 11th-ranked Riley Wright at 149. Hertel extended the lead to 13-8 with a major decision (12-2) over Dylan Falck at 157. 

Noah Leisgang earned the win by decision (7-2) over seventh-ranked Will Esmoil at 165-pounds to give UWL a 16-8 lead and Brossard extended the lead to 21-8 with a technical fall over 15th-ranked LJ Richardson at 174.

Coe (Iowa) cut the lead to 21-11 after 12th-ranked Tristin Westpahl won by sudden victory (11-9) over Jahn at 184. Kawczynski won by major decision (16-8) over seventh-ranked Jake Voss at 197-pounds to give UWL a 25-11 lead. 

Marcus Orlandoni concluded the dual with a decision (6-4) over Stone Cummings at 285-pounds.

UWL returns to action Thursday, December 8 at the Rochester Community & Technical College (Minn.) Duals. The Eagles face Iowa Lakes Community College at 4:30 p.m. and host RCTC (Minn.) at 6 p.m.
