Madison, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse wrestling team, third in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Dual Team Rankings, improved to 7-0 on the season with a 38-6 victory over Cornell College (Iowa) Sunday afternoon in the University of Wisconsin's Field House. The Rams drop to 3-2 on the year.
The dual was part of the Wisconsin Wrestling Showcase featuring National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I, II and III institutions.
In the NCAA Division I match, Wisconsin earned a 37-3 victory over Drexel University (Pa.) while in NCAA Division II, UW-Parkside picked up a 24-14 win over McKendree College (Ill.).
UWL earned its 599th dual win as a program with Sunday's victory. Cornell (Iowa) took the first two matches with Jase Van Pelt winning by decision (8-2) over
Brandon Murphy at 125-pounds and Evan Husko winning by decision (5-0) over
Remington Bontreger at 133 to make it 6-0.
The Eagles then ran out eight straight dual victories. UWL cut the lead to 6-5 with
Sam Lorenz winning by technical fall (17-0, 2:45) over Eli Sneed at 141-pounds. UWL took its first lead of the day at 149-pounds with
Tyler Goebel getting the major decision (10-0) over Jacob Ramirez to give the Eagles a 9-6 lead.
Nolan Hertel extended the lead to 13-6 with a major decision (8-0) over Gabriel Smith at 157.
Noah Leisgang followed with a win by fall (2:40) over Cory Stewart at 165-pounds and
Seth Brossard's technical fall victory (22-5, 5:23) over Dahson Dejong at 174 made it 24-6.
The Eagles'
Kalyn Jahn won by fall (2:02) over Cael Mclaren at 184-pounds.
Ben Kawczynski and
Michael Douglas completed the dual with major decisions. Kawczynski defeated Treyten Steffen at 197 (12-2) while Douglas beat Landen Schemmel at 285 (13-3).
UWL returns to action Wednesday, December 14 at UW-Eau Claire at 7 p.m.
