Thirteen Players Score in Win over Carthage

Box Score De Pere, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the season with a 53-36 win over Carthage College (Wis.) in the St. Norbert College (Wis.) Tip-Off Tournament. The Firebirds were playing their season-opener. 

UWL scored the first 12 points of the game before Carthage (Wis.) got on the scoreboard with 4:54 remaining in the first quarter. The Eagles took a 14-3 lead on a Paige Schumann jumper with 1:36 left before the Firebirds got five straight points from Lauren Knight to cut the lead to 14-8. A three-point play from Kyah Steiner with :11 remaining gave UWL a 17-8 lead after the first quarter. 

The teams combined for 12 points in the second quarter as UWL took a 25-12 halftime advantage. 

Carthage (Wis.) cut the lead to 25-15 with 8:24 left in the third quarter, but could get no closer the rest of the game. UWL went on a 9-0 run to lead 34-15. The Eagles led, 41-23, after three quarters. 

UWL took its largest lead of the game at 47-24 with 7:38 remaining on a Lauryn Milne three-pointer. 

UWL shot 30.0% from the field Friday, including 20.7% (six-of-29) from three-point range, and 61.1% (11-of-18) at the free throw line. Thirteen different players scored for the Eagles with Steiner and Kailee Meeker leading the team with eight points each. Alivia Arnebeck had six points. Schumann and Gabby Ritchie led UWL with seven rebounds while Schumann had a team-high five assists and tied for the team lead with Milne with three steals. Steiner added six rebounds and two steals.

Carthage (Wis.) shot 20.0% from the field, including 15.0% (three-of-15) from three-point range, and 72.2% (13-of-18) at the line. Knight led the Firebirds with 15 points. Knight and Bridget Barrett each had seven rebounds. 

UWL returns to action Saturday, November 12 facing Lawrence University (Wis.) at 5 p.m. in De Pere.
