Balanced Scoring Leads to Home Win over UW-Platteville

Box Score La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team earned its second straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) win with a 64-53 victory over UW-Platteville Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles improve to 12-7 overall and 4-4 in the WIAC with the win while the Pioneers drop to 9-10 overall and 2-7 in the conference. 

Neither team scored until Brynlee Nelson's layup gave UW-Platteville a 2-0 lead with 7:09 remaining in the first quarter. UWL took a 4-2 lead on layups from Carly Coulthart and Emma Gamoke. The Eagles led, 9-8 after the first quarter.  

After going a combined seven-of-26 (26.9%) from the field in the first quarter, the teams went 15-of-27 (55.6%) in the second quarter. The Pioneers opened the second quarter on a 9-1 run to take a 17-10 lead on Maiah Domask's layup with 6:48 left. UW-Platteville led, 19-12, when UWL responded on a 10-0 run of its own to take a 22-19 lead with 3:20 remaining on Kailee Meeker's layup. The Eagles led, 26-25, at halftime after shooting 58.3% (seven-of-12) from the field in the second quarter.

Emma Gamoke had a team-high 13 points in the win. 


UWL scored the first five points of the third quarter on Kyah Steiner's layup and Gamoke's three-pointer to take a 31-25 lead. The Eagles took their largest lead to that point at 41-33 with 4:01 left in the quarter on Paige Schumann's turnaround jumper. Sarah Mueller's three-pointer cut the deficit to 41-36, but UWL finished the quarter on a 6-1 run to lead 47-37. 

The Eagles outscored the Pioneers, 21-12, in the third quarter while shooting 71.4% (10-of-14) from the field. 

Starting the fourth quarter on a 7-3 run, UWL took a 54-40 lead on Coulthart's three-point basket. UW-Platteville could get no closer than 10 points the rest of the game. UWL went 10-of-12 at the free throw line in the final quarter.

UWL shot 46.2% from the field, including 25.0% (four-of-16) from three-point range, and 75.0% (12-of-16) at the line. Gamoke led the Eagles with 13 points while Meeker and Schumann each finished with eight. Twelve different players scored in the game. Lexie Higgins finished with six rebounds.

UW-Platteville, losers of seven straight, shot 34.5% from the field, including 25.0% (five-of-20) from three-point range, and 71.4% (10-of-14) at the line. Allison Heckert and Taylor Gilbert led the Pioneers with 10 points each while Nelson finished with nine. Domask had a game-high seven rebounds.

UWL returns to action Wednesday, February 2 at UW-Whitewater at 7 p.m.
