Stevens Point, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's basketball team snapped a two-game losing streak with a 67-49 win at UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon in Berg Gymnasium. The Eagles improve to 11-7 overall and 3-4 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while the Pointers drop to 9-6 overall and 2-4 in the conference.
It marks UWL's 700th win in school history.
Anna Schoenike's three-point play with 4:34 left in the first quarter gave UW-Stevens Point a 8-6, but
Gabby Ritchie connected on a three-point field goal with 4:08 remaining to give UWL a 9-8 advantage. The Eagles took 12-8 lead on
Carly Coulthart's three-pointer and
Alana Gilles' layup with 1:15 left gave UWL its largest lead of the first half at 14-8. UW-Stevens Point scored the five points of the quarter to cut the deficit to 14-13.
UWL led 22-17 with 4:49 left in the second quarter when it used a 6-2 run on a pair of
Paige Schumann three-pointers to take a 28-19 advantage. The Pointers cut it to 30-24 on Jessica Slowik's jumper, but
Grace Cote's three-pointer and Ritchie's jumper gave the Eagles a 35-24 lead. UWL led, 37-25, at halftime.
The Eagles scored the first seven points of the second half to take a 44-25 lead on a
Lexie Higgins' jumper. The Pointers cut the lead to 52-36 after three quarters.
After Taylor Greenheck's layup to open the fourth quarter cut the lead to 52-38, UWL scored the next eight points to take a 60-38 advantage on
Kyah Steiner's three-point basket. The Eagles led by as many as 23 points in the fourth quarter.
UWL shot 45.1% from the field, including 64.3% (nine-of-14) from three-point range, and 66.7% (12-of-18) at the free throw line. The Eagles were seven-of-nine from three-point range in the first half. Schmann led UWL with 16 points while Steiner had 10 points and team-high seven rebounds. Higgins and Ritchie each finished with nine points.
UW-Stevens Point shot 27.7% from the field, including 16.7% (two-of-12) from three-point range, and 72.4% (21-of-29) at the line. Greenheck led the Pointers with 10 points with Slowik finishing with nine. Schoenike had a team-leading five rebonds.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, January 26 hosting UW-Platteville at 7 p.m.
