River Falls, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse soccer team opened Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play with a 4-2 win at UW-River Falls Wednesday afternoon at Ramer Soccer Stadium.
UWL improves to 7-2-1 overall while UW-River Falls drops to 5-6-1 on the season. The Falcons were also playing their WIAC opener.
It marks UWL's sixth straight win to start WIAC play. The Eagles are 6-0-4 in their last 10 conference openers, including 6-0-1 all-time under head coach
Jason Murphy.
UW-River Falls scored a pair of first half goals on Wednesday, including Kassidy Mackie at 23:10 assisted by Aliviah McClinton to give it a 1-0 lead. The Falcons made it 2-0 at 37:21 on McClinton's unassisted goal.
UWL was held scoreless in the first half despite outshooting UW-River Falls, 14-4. The Eagles had four corner kicks in the first 45:00 while the Falcons had one.
Rachael Janes scored her third goal of the season Wednesday.
The Eagles cut the lead to 2-1 at 52:44 on
Ellie Arndt's goal with an assist from
Ainsley Allan. UWL quickly tied the game at 2-2 on
Camryn Hart's unassisted goal at 58:40. Less than four minutes later,
Natalie Schisel gave UWL a 3-2 advantage with an unassisted goal.
Rachael Janes finished the scoring at 83:05 with an assist from Arndt to make it 4-2.
UWL outshot UW-River Falls, 18-1 in the second half. The Eagles totaled 32 shots on Wednesday, including 17 on goal. Thirteen different players recorded a shot for UWL with Allan finishing with five, including three on goal. Hart had four shots and
Sophie Amundson with three as both players had three shots on goal. Schisel and Janes each had two shots on goal.
The Eagles' four goals and 17 shots on goal tied single-season highs.
UWL finished with nine corner kicks to UW-River Falls' two. The Falcons were held to five shots with three on goal. Alexis Peterson had two shots with one on goal.
Quinn Shannon earned the win in goal, finishing with one save. Kaylie Krueger had 11 saves for UW-River Falls.
UWL returns to action Saturday, October 2 at UW-Stevens Point at 1 p.m.
