La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team went 1-1 on day two of the UWL Invitational Saturday in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles fell to 16th-ranked Wartburg College (Iowa) 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-21) in their first match and before defeating Hamline University (Minn.) 3-1 (26-24, 15-25, 25-18, 25-18). UWL, receiving votes on this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll, is now 11-2 on the season.
Brianne Korducki had 11 kills vs. Wartburg.
Wartburg (Iowa), ranked 16th on the AVCA Poll and 11-0 on the year, build an early 5-0 lead in the opening set and UWL would not get any closer than three points the rest of the set. UWL was held to a .104 hitting percentage in the first set. The second set saw the Eagles tie it at 7-7 before the Knights went on an 8-1 run to take a 15-8 lead. UWL got as close as 23-18.
UWL was held to a .034 hitting percentage in the third set as they were able to overcome an early deficit of 7-3. The Eagles put a run together late in the set to cut their deficit to 21-19, but the Knights scored four of the final six points to seal the win.
Emma Lawrence led UWL with a match-high 13 kills while
Sydney Fedderly added eight.
Megan Adams finished with 15 assists and Lawrence recorded a career-high 23 digs for her third straight double-double of the season. Kylie Bildstein led Wartburg (Iowa) with seven kills while Claire Marsh finished with 20 assists. Katie Foster had 29 digs.
Sydney Fedderly had 12 kills Saturday.
Hamline (Minn.) led, 18-10, in the first set, but UWL came back to cut the lead to 21-16 on a
Anna Rossner kill. The Pipers took a 23-18 lead before three straight kills from Lawrence and a
Isabelle Jensen service ace for the Eagles cut the lead to 23-22. Hamline (Minn.) took a 24-22 lead, but UWL scored the final four points to earn the opening set win. Brianna Korducki's kill made it 24-23 followed by a Hamline (Minn.) hitting error to tie it. Lawrence gave the Eagles a 25-24 lead on a kill and UWL won the set after a bad set from Hamline (Minn.).
The second set was tied at 9-9 when Hamline (Minn.) went on a 9-2 run to lead 18-11. UWL could get no closer than six points the rest of the set. The third set was tied seven times, including 13-13. Korducki's kill and a Jensen service ace gave UWL a two-point lead. The Eagles would never trail the rest of the set. Leading 16-15, UWL scored the next four points.
UWL trailed, 15-12, in the fourth set when it went on a 8-0 run to lead 20-15. Lawrence had five kills in the run, including four straight. Hamline (Minn.) could get no closer than four points the rest of the set.
Lawrence led UWL with 26 kills while hitting .357 (26-6-56). Korducki finished with 11 kills.
Jackie Oetterer had 25 assists and Adams 22 as the Eagles hit .229 for the match. Jensen led four players in double figures in digs with 19. Adams and Lawrence each recorded 13 while
Sophie Quelle had 11. UWL had 6.0 team blocks.
Hamline (Minn.), dropping to 7-2 on the season, was led by Sydney Nelson with 16 kills. Megan Rubbelke had 26 assists as the Pipers hit .104. Jenna Rubbelke had 18 digs and Megan Rubbelke 15. Hamline (Minn.) had 2.0 team blocks.
Lawrence and Rossner were named to the all-tournament team at the conclusion of play.
UWL returns to action Wednesday, September 22 hosting UW-Oshkosh at 7 p.m. in Mitchell Hall.
