UWL Rallies in Fifth Set to Earn Home Win over UW-Oshkosh

La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse volleyball team, receiving votes on this week's American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top-25 Poll, earned a 3-2 (25-22, 25-19, 17-25, 22-25, 15-11) victory over UW-Oshkosh in Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) play Wednesday night in Mitchell Hall. The Eagles improve to 12-2 overall and 2-0 in the WIAC while the Titans drop to 7-7 overall and 0-2 in the conference.

UWL took the first two sets before UW-Oshkosh rallied to win the next two sets. The Titans got out ot a 5-2 lead in the fifth and deciding set after a Robyn Kirsch kill. UW-Oshkosh led, 10-7, and later, 11-8 on a Olivia Breunig kill. UWL scored the last seven points to earn the win.  Anna Rossner's kill tied the set, 11-11, before UW-Oshkosh had four straight attack errors to end the match.    

UW-Oshkosh led, 12-6, in the opening set.  The Titans later led, 15-10, but the Eagles used a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 17-16 on back-to-back kills from Emma Lawrence.  Nottoli's kill later gave UW-Oshkosh a 19-16 advantage, but Rossner's kill and a pair of kills from Liz Lansink from UWL tied the set, 19-19. The set was tied, 21-21, when Brianne Korducki's kill and an attack error gave the Eagles a 23-21 advantage.  Kirsch cut the lead to 23-22, but a kill from Lawrence and Titans' hitting error secured the first set for UWL. 

The Titans scored the first three points of the second set, but the Eagles scored the next five points. The set was tied nine times, including 18-18, but UWL ended the set with a 7-1 run. 

UW-Oshkosh rallied to take the next two sets to force the fifth set. UWL led, 8-6 in the third set, when UW-Oshkosh went on a 7-0 run to lead 13-8 on an Nottoli kill. The Eagles cut it to 14-12, but the Titans scored five unanswered points for a 19-12 lead.  UWL could get no closer than five points the rest of the third set.

A pair of attack errors by UWL gave UW-Oshkosh a 9-5 lead in the fourth set.  The Titans led, 18-11, when the Eagles scored four straight points. UW-Oshkosh later led 23-17 on a Breunig kill and 24-18 after a Joslyn Wolff kill. UWL scored four straight points to cut the lead to 24-22, but Breunig's kill gae UW-Oshkosh the win. 

Lawrence led UWL with 20 kills while Korducki finished with nine. Lansink and Rossner each had seven kills. Megan Adams had 23 assists with Jackie Oetterer finishing with 17. The Eagles hit .157 for the match. Adams led UWL with 17 digs while Sophie Quelle finished with 12 and Lawrence 10. It was Lawrence's fourth straight double-double and ninth this season.  UWL had 3.0 team blocks.

Riley Kindt led UW-Oshkosh with 12 kills with Breunig finishing with nine and Nottoli seven. Kalli Mau finished with 32 assists as the Titans hit .124. Amelia Hust led the team with 19 digs with Abby Fregien finished with 15. UW-Oshkosh had 5.0 team blocks.

UWL returns to action Friday, September 24 hosting Macalester College (Minn.) at 7 p.m.
