Heptathlon Results (Day 1)
River Falls, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse women's track & field team leads after the first day of action Friday at the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championships (presented by Culver's) at David A. Smith Stadium at Rammer Field at UW-River Falls.
The Eagles have 85.5 team points while UW-Eau Claire is second with 52.0 and UW-Stevens Point third with 29.0. UW-Oshkosh is fourth (22.0) followed by UW-Whitewater (16.0
), UW-River Falls (15.5), UW-Stout (14.0) and UW-Platteville (0.0).
Emma Malooly captured the 3,000-meter steeplechase on Friday.
UWL is striving for its ninth straight league title and 35th in school history.
The Eagles captured a pair of individual titles on Friday as
Skye Digman won the hammer throw (178-2) and
Emma Malooly the 3,000-meter steeplechase (10:52.90). Digman is the first UWL thrower to win the title since Kristin Raether in 2002. Malooly became the first UWL runner to captured the steeplechase since Stephanie Perleberg won back-to-back tiltes in 2009-10.
UWL had the top-three finishers in Friday's hammer throw. Along with Digman winning the crown,
Brianna Schyvinck was second (175-1) and
Pamela Gramer third (172-10). The Eagles'
Katheryn Horne placed seventh (158-11).
Maddy Vantassel was fifth (11:27.99) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.
Jenna Lovejoy was third (38:05.11) and
Julia Anderson sixth (38:36.90) in the 10,000-meter run.
UWL had five of the top-eight finishers in the long jump on Friday with
Jessica Stelzner second (18-1 3/4),
Madison Page fifth (17-10 3/4),
Hannah Zenkovich sixth (17-10 3/4),
Sydney Wambach seventh (17-10 1/4) and
Kemmesha Thomas eighth (17-7).
Three Eagles placed in the top-eight in the pole vault as
Abby Meidl was third (11-10 3/4),
Ashley O'Connell fourth (11-10 3/4) and
Lindsay Ruf tied for seventh (10-11). UWL's
Skylar White was sixth (111-11),
Gabby Johnson seventh (109-1) and
Carley Elmhorst eighth (107-2) in the javelin throw.
After four events in the heptathlon, UWL's
Amanda Wiebke is in third-place (2,743 points) while White is seventh (2,333 points). Friday's events included the 100-meter hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200-meter dash. The event concludes Saturday with the long jump, javelin throw and 800-meter run.
In preliminary action on the track Friday, Zenkovich (14.22),
Emma Lawrence (14.33) and
Clair Shepardson (14.81) all advanced to Saturday's finals in the 100-meter hurdles while Zenkovich (1:02.51), Lawrence (1:02.92),
Melanie Kunze (1:05.23) and
Brooke McDowell (1:06.20) advanced in the 400-meter hurldes.
Savannah Rygiewicz,
Emily Dawidowich,
Kelly Aldrich, and
Aly Reuvers all advanced in the 100-meter and 200-meter dash. Rygiewicz ran 12.05, Aldrich 12.25, Dawidowich 12.31 and Reuvers finished with a time of 12.34 in the 100-meter run. In the 200-meter dash Dawidowich ran a 24.85, Rygiewicz 25.01, Aldrich 25.25 and Reuvers 25.69.
UWL had a pair of runners advance in the 400-meter dash with
Lucy Fashingbauer (58.50) and
Amber Johnson (58.55) while
Katie Banie (2:16.06) and
Claire Koenecke (2:16.08) advance in the 800-meter run.
