Box Score 2 Eau Claire, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) doubleheader sweep at UW-Eau Claire Tuesday afternoon at Bollinger Field. The Eagles won the opener, 8-0, and the nightcap, 7-6. UWL improves to 22-10 overall and 14-8 in the WIAC while UW-Eau Claire drops to 4-26 overall and 4-18 in the conference.
UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third in the opener.
Mac Born reached on a fielder's choice with two outs.
Shane Coker was hit-by-pitch and Andrew Rajkvoich struck out, but reached first base on a UW-Eau Claire passed ball.
Jack Kelly then drew a bases-loaded walk to score Born to make it 1-0.
The Eagles took a 3-0 lead in the seventh as Coker doubled with two outs and scored on Rajkovich's two-run home run. Born's single in the top of the eighth scored
Zach Carney to make it 4-0.
Shane Coker had three hits in Tuesday's doubleheader.
UWL added four runs in the ninth. Parker Plume walked opening in the inning and went to third on Carney's double. Plume scored on a UW-Eau Claire wild pitch with Carney advancing to third. Jonathan Wizner followed with an RBI single to knock in Carney for a 6-0 lead. Brennan Schmitt doubled home Wizner and Coker finished the scoring with an RBI single to knock in Schmitt.
Zach Pronschinske earned the complete-game shutout for UWL, going 9.0 innings, allowing five hits and three walks while striking out a season-high 12. The 12 strikeouts are one away from Pronschinske's career-high of 13 in a 2-1 victory over UW-Whitewater on April 29, 2019.
It is Pronschinske's second complete-game shutout of the season. He went 9.0 innings, allowing four hits and one walk with nine strikeouts in UWL's 6-0 victory over UW-Stout on April 20. Pronschinske went 5.0 innings in the Eagles' 13-0 win over Finlandia University (Mich.) on April 30, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out nine.
In his last three starts, Pronschinske has pitched 23.0 innings, allowing 11 hits, six walks and no runs while recording 30 strikeouts.
UWL finished with 12 hits in Tuesday's opener with Wizner finishing 3-for-6. Coker went 2-for-3 while Schmitt finished 2-for-4 and Born 2-for-5.
Tom Ginther took the loss for UW-Eau Claire, going 5.0 innings, allowing three hits, one run (unearned) and six walks while striking out six. Five different players recorded a hit for the Blugolds.
In the nightcap, UW-Eau Claire took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Chase Yaeger scored on a wild pitch. The Blugolds tallied four runs in the bottom of the fourth, highlighted by Will Jilek's two-run double.
Andrew Rajkovich (#40) hit a two-run home run in the opener.
UWL cut the lead to 5-1 in the top of the fifth. Wizner singled with two outs and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Schmitt followed with an RBI single to score Wizner. The Eagles' Colton Schraepfer scored on a passed ball in the top of the seventh to make it 5-2. UWL took the lead with five runs in the top of the eighth. Born and Coker were hit-by-pitch to start the inning. After a fly-out, Schraepfer reached on a UW-Eau Claire error to load the bases. Ty Hamilton's sacrifice fly scored Born to cut the margin to 5-3. Plume was hit-by-pitch to load the bases and Carney followed with a single to score Coker and Schraepfer to tie the game and Plume came in on another Blugolds' error to give the Eagles a 6-5 lead. Wizner followed with an RBI double to knock in Carney to make it 7-5.
Jilek walked to start the bottom of the ninth for UW-Eau Claire and went to second on David Janssen's one-out single. Nate Witte followed with a single to score Jilek, but was thrown out trying to go to second. Janssen moved to third on a passed ball, but Logan Matson struck out to end the game.
Alex Mach earned the win for UWL, pitching 5.0 innings in relief. He allowed two hits, one run and three walks while striking out a career-high 10. Jack Mizgalski started, going 4.0 innings, allowing three hits, five runs and five walks with two strikeouts. The Eagles had eight hits with Wizner going 3-for-4 with a run scored and RBI. Carney had three RBI while Schraepfer scored twice.
Brenton Boldt took the loss for UW-Eau Claire, pitching 0.2 of an inning, allowing one hit and five runs (three earned). Will Mosinski started, going 7.0 innings, allowing six hits, two runs and four walks while striking out five. The Blugolds had five hits in the game. Jilek had two RBI.
The teams will play another WIAC doubleheader Friday, May 7 at 1 p.m. at Copeland Park in La Crosse.
