Box Score Whitewater, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team was eliminated from the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Championship (presented by Culver's) after a 12-8 loss to UW-Stevens Point Friday night at UW-Whitewater's Prucha Field at Jim Miller Stadium. The Eagles, the tournament's third-seed, fall to 30-13 on the season. Top-seeded UW-Stevens Point improves to 31-10 and will play Saturday, May 22 at noon versus UW-Whitewater or UW-Stout.
UWL fell 5-4 to UW-Whitewater in Friday's opening game while UW-Stevens Point lost, 15-0 in seven innings, to UW-Stout.
The Pointers took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning on Friday night on only one hit. Tommy Duddleston and Aaron Simmons both drew bases-loaded walks to make it 2-0 and Payton Nelson had a sacrifice fly for the third run of the inning.
Jonathan Wizner went 2-for-4 vs. UW-Stevens Point.
UWL tied the contest in the top of the third.
Shane Coker singled to start the inning followed by an
Ethan Gerstner walk. After a strikeout,
Connor Roesler hit a three-run home run to tie the game, 3-3. UW-Stevens Point responded with four runs in the bottom of the third to regain the lead. Quin Henwood scored on Kyle Finger's single to give the Pointers a 4-3 lead and Simmons delivered a two-out three-run double making it 7-3.
Both teams scored a run in the fourth.
Jack Olver doubled to start the inning for UWL and scored on Coker's RBI double to make it 7-4, but the Pointers' Lucas Luedtke hit a solo home run in the bottom of the inning to give UW-Stevens Point a 8-4 lead.
The Eagles cut the margin to 8-6 with a pair of runs in the fifth as
Zach Carney started the inning with a single and went to second on
Brennan Schmitt's infield single.
Mac Born followed with an RBI single knocking in Carney to make it 8-5 and Olver's RBI ground out cut the margin to one. Bradley Comer's home run to lead-off the bottom of the sixth gave the Pointers a 9-6 lead.
UWL made it 9-8 in the top of the seventh, but UW-Stevens Point got the two runs back in the bottom of the inning. Coker had an RBI single for UWL in the seventh to score Born with an unearned run while Olver scored another unearned run on
Ethan Gerstner's sacrifice bunt. Simmons had an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch for UW-Stevens Point in the bottom of the seventh to make it 11-8. Henwood's solo home run in the bottom of the eighth provided the final scoring in the game.
Ben Byom (0-2) suffered the loss for UWL, pitching 0.2 of an inning, allowing one hit four runs and three walks.
Sawyer Phillips started for the Eagles, going 1.1 innings, allowing one hit, three runs and three walks with one strikeout. UWL finished with 10 hits in the game. Coker went 3-for-5 with two RBI and one run while
Jonathan Wizner finished 2-for-4. Roesler had a team-high three RBI while Olver scored twice.
Nick Carpenter (5-1) earned the win for UW-Stevens Point. He went 3.0 innings in relief, allowing four hits, four runs (two earned) and two walks with one strikeout. Sidney Ferry recorded his ninth save, going 2.0 innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout. The Pointers totaled 11 hits in the game with Simmons finishing 3-for-4 with five RBI and one run. Henwood, Finger and Matt Baumann each had two hits with Henwood and Finger each scoring three times. Seven different players scored a run for the Pointers.
