Box Score 2 Oshkosh, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep at UW-Oshkosh Saturday afternoon at Tiedemann Field in its regular-season finale. The Eagles took the opener, 9-6, and the nightcap, 6-2. UWL improves to 29-11 overall and 19-9 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Oshkosh drops to 20-17 overall and 16-12 in the conference.
Brennan Schmitt went 5-for-5 in the opener.
With the win in the opener, UWL clinched the third seed for the WIAC Championships (presented by Culver's). The Eagles will host sixth-seeded UW-Platteville in a first round game on Wednesday, May 19 at 1 p.m. at Copeland Park.
UWL, winners of 13 of its last 14 games overall, took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first in Saturday's opener.
Connor Roesler doubled to start the game and scored on a
Brennan Schmitt single. Schmitt went to third on a UW-Oshkosh error and scored on
Mac Born's ground out.
UW-Oshkosh tied the game in the bottom of the second with a pair of unearned runs. Matt Scherrman scored on Jake Andersen's sacrifice fly and Connor Giusti scored on a Eric Modaff single to tie the contest.
The Eagles regained the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. With two outs,
Zach Carney struck out, but reached first on a passed ball. Schmitt, Born and
Jack Olver followed with singles to make it 4-2 with Born and Olver both recording an RBI.
The Titans took their first lead of the game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth, but the Eagles responded with three runs in the top of the seventh to take a 7-5 lead. Modaff had a two-run double for UW-Oshkosh in the sixth to tie the game followed by a Jake Surane RBI single to give the Titans a 5-4 lead. Carney scored on
Shane Coker's sacrifice fly to the game at 5-5 and
Ethan Gerstner delivered a two-out two-run single knocking in Schmitt and Olver for a 7-5 advantage. UW-Oshkosh cut the lead to 7-6 in the bottom of the seventh on Jarrett Scheelk's solo home run.
Zach Carney scored five times.
The Eagles added two runs in the eighth. Carney doubled with one out and scored on Schmitt's triple, who then scored on Born's ground out.
Alex Mach (4-1) earned the win in relief, pitching 3.1 innings, allowing two hits and one run while striking out four.
Zach Pronschinske started for UWL, going 5.2 innings, allowing nine hits, five runs (three earned) and three walks while striking out six. The Eagles had 13 hits in the opener as Schmitt finished 5-for-5 with four runs and two RBI. It marks the 14th time in school history a UWL player recorded five hits in a game and the first since Carter Hoffman against UW-Stout on April 24, 2016. Matt Goebel holds the school record with six hits versus Concordia University-St. Paul (Minn.) on April 13, 1996.
Wizner and Gerstner each had two hits in the opener on Saturday. Born finished with a team-high three RBI while Carney scored three times.
Harry Orth (2-3) suffered the loss for UW-Oshkosh, going 6.1 innings, allowing 10 hits, six runs (four earned) and one walk while striking out five. The Titans totaled 11 hits as Modaff and Surane each went 3-for-5. Modaff had three RBI and scored once. Giusti scored twice.
Charlie Dardis (3-0) earned the victory in the nightcap for UWL, pitching 5.1 innings, allowing seven hits, two runs (one earned) and four walks.
Ben Byom went 1.2 innings, allowing one hit and one walk, while
Chris Seveska pitched 2.0 innings with three strikeouts.
UWL took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Carney singled to start the game and stole second. He moved to third on Wizner's ground out and scored on a Schmitt ground out. UW-Oshkosh tied the game in the bottom of the inning. Modaff singled to start the inning and went to second on a Surnane single. Surane stole second and Modaff third with Modaff scoring on a UWL throwing error.
The Eagles took a 2-1 lead in the third inning after Carney reached on a fielding error and advanced to second on the play. After a pop-out, Schmitt doubled home Carney with an unearned run. UWL added to its lead with a pair of runs in the fourth inning, both coming on sacrifice flies from
Ty Hamilton (scoring Coker) and
Parker Plume (scoring
Spencer Hans).
UW-Oshkosh cut the lead to 4-2 in the sixth on Giusti's solo home run. UWL took a 6-2 lead in the eighth as Born singled and scored on Olver's two-run home run.
Charlie Dardis allowed one earned run in 5.1 innings.
UWL finished with 13 hits as Born and Hans each had three. Coker added two hits while Schmitt and Olver each had two RBI. Carney scored twice.

UWL returns to action Wednesday, May 19 hosting UW-Platteville at 1 p.m. at Copeland Park in the first round of the WIAC Championships.
