Box Score 2 La Crosse, Wis. - The University of Wisconsin-La Crosse baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep over UW-Platteville Friday afternoon at Copeland Park. The Eagles won the opener, 14-3 in seven innings, and the nightcap, 14-4 in eight innings. UWL improves to 10-4 overall and 5-3 in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) while UW-Platteville drops to 8-6 overall and 4-4 in the conference.
In the opener, UWL took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first as
Zach Carney scored on a
Brennan Schmitt single. UW-Platteville took a 2-1 lead in the third on Jonathan Kelso's two-run home run.
Sawyer Phillips earned the complete-game victory.
UWL tied the game in the fourth as Schmitt scored on a passed ball. The Eagles took a 6-2 lead with four runs in the fifth.
Mac Born's infield single with the bases loaded gave UWL a 3-2 lead and
Jonathan Wizner scored on a UW-Platteville throwing error.
Ty Hamilton's sacrifice fly made it 5-2 and
Parker Plume's RBI single finished the scoring in the inning.
Mitchell McLaughlin's RBI single for UW-Platteville cut the lead to 6-3 in the top of the sixth, but Schmitt's RBI double in the bottom of the inning knocked in
Connor Roesler for UWL. The Eagles tallied seven runs in the seventh. Plume started the scoring with an RBI single while Wizner and Schmitt each drew bases-loaded walks. Born then delivered a two-out grand slam to end the game.
Sawyer Phillips (3-1) earned the win in the opener, pitching a complete-game. He went 7.0 innings, allowing four hits, three runs and two walks while striking out three. UWL finished with 14 hits as Schmitt went 3-for-3 with three runs, three RBI and two walks. Roesler, Born, Plume and
Shane Coker each had two hits. Born finished with a game-high five RBI while Roesler scored three times.
Sam Hernandez (2-2) suffered the loss for UW-Platteville, going 6.0 innings, allowing 10 hits, seven runs (five earned) and one walk with three strikeouts. The Pioneers totaled four hits with Kelso going 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBI.
In the nightcap, UW-Platteville took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first as Austin Pullara singled knocked in Kelso and Jason Adams. UWL would answer back in the bottom of the first as Wizner singled up the middle driving in Carney to make it 2-1. Schmitt followed with a two-run double scoring Roesler and Wizner to give UWL a 3-2 lead. The Eagles added to their lead with a pair of runs in the second on Wizner's RBI single and Born's fielder's choice.
UW-Platteville cut the deficit to 5-4 with two runs in the fifth, but UWL responded with two runs of its own in the bottom of the inning. Coker's single scored Born to make it 6-4 and Hamilton's RBI single knocked in Coker for a three-run UWL lead. The Eagles took a 10-4 lead with three runs in the sixth on Born's two-run home run and Plume's RBI double.
UWL earned its second 10-run win with four runs in the bottom of the eight. Born, Coker and Plume each had run-scoring singles and
Andrew Rajkovich had a fielder's choice to score a run.
Connor Roesler went 4-for-6 with five runs on Friday.
UWL totaled a season-high 19 hits in the nightcap Friday as Wizner, Born, Coker and Hamilton each finished with three. Carney, Roesler and Plume each had two hits. The top-six in the Eagles' line-up combined to score all 14 runs with Born and Coker each scoring three times. Born had four RBI in the game while Wizner, Schmitt, Coker and Plume each had two.
Brady Schmitt (1-0) earned the victory for UWL, pitching 3.2 innings in relief. He allowed one hit while striking out five.
Ben Byom started for the Eagles, going 4.1 innings, allowing three hits, four runs (two earned) and two walks with four strikeouts.
UW-Platteville finished with four hits in Friday's second game as Adams went 2-for-4 with two runs. Shane Nolan (1-1) suffered the loss for the Pioneers, pitching 2.0 innings, allowing seven hits, five runs and two walks.
UWL and UW-Platteville will play a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday, April 13 at 1 p.m. in Platteville.
